I have a dyslexia pupil doing Grade 2 flute exam shortly. I know that she can have extra time for the sight reading. Is there anything else she is entitled to do, take into the exam with her? This girl is the only dyslexic pupil that I have. Any tips would be great! .

If she has short term memory issues (which can be part of dyslexia) she can take a scales manual in, to which she can refer, but not read. You have to apply for this in writing in advance (but I managed to get it agreed for my son 1 week before exam!!!!). There is somewhere on this site the special needs section. Can anyone provide the link?

Special needs information is here.

She can also ask for extra large print for sight reading, and take coloured overlays in. I think all this has to be agreed/arranged in advance.

You must have applied in advance with all the proper educational support material for this to apply. It won't happen automatically. Otherwise, the responses you have received to date are correct - scale books, for reference only, are allowed and you can request special sight-reading tests (larger etc) and use coloured overlays.

When you apply for dyslexic students you should receive from the Board a sheet of information which tells you exactly what is permitted as well as confirming that they've received the material you've sent to support the application for dyslexic status. I have always done so for special needs children I've entered.

Good luck to your candidate whatever. smile.gif

I have a dyslexic 12-year-old taking Grade 3 violin on Thursday. We had to apply to the Board with written evidence when the entries went in. He is allowed 3 minutes for sight-reading preparation, and additional attempts at aural tests if required. The examiner will also be generally sympathetic to memory lapses in the exam and will repeat instructions if necessary. The Board's Guidelines for Candidates with Dyslexia and other Learning Difficulties gives much helpful information.
