I play the oboe and some people have mistaken it as a trombone? or the more common mistake is the clarinet.

Some people don't always know what an oboe is so I just normally have to say it looks a bit a like a clarinet slightly thinner body a different reed.

my cello has always been mistaken as a guitar....so now the cello has been named "the giant version of guitar"...

My mum came out with a cracker the other day...
She said to me, "Jess you play a woodwind instrument don't you?"
Well I thought violin was bad but woodwind??? In her defence she said that my viola was made of wood, but that didn't explain why it has strings on it...
I thought that was quite funny! biggrin.gif

I've been playing loads of grade 5ish pieces and I played in a 3day orchestra course in the holiday. I really wish that they'd put the PM feature back!!!

luckily i don't get much confusion with my piano and saxophone but once someone said to me so do u play the flute when i was holding my clarinet in it's case. I was also having a test at school and we had to listen to a piece of music by a saxophonist and the question was "was this played by an alto sax or a baritone sax" and some people in my class were like "there's only one kind of saxophoe though isn't there?!?!" and i was just thinking "uhhh there's about 7 types!" blink.gif lol!

Well whenever I tell someone I learn the harpsichord. They reply,
'Oh the harp...yes I love the harp.'
I'm then forced to explain what a harpsichord is and seeing that they are beyond help I usually say , 'it's sort of like a piano' and the conversation finishes there.

I want a harpsichord so badly...

I haven't had much bad experiences with the misunderstanding or dumbfoundedness of people when I talk about instruments to them...

No worries! My violins been mistaken for a dying mouse& my cello for a hyper cow!
Never mind- some people just don't appreciate the good things in life!!!
Bb Clarinet
You also get the usual generic instruments associated with every instrumental family:

eg, people only know one instrument from the family, therefore they think everything else is either a miniature or enlarged version of that instrument! My poor clarinet is often mistaken for "is that, like, just a big flute then?" "Erm, no, retard!"

Wind - it's bound to be a flute!
String - "What's a cello?", "Oh god, it's a big violin."
Brass - Trumpets win hands down!

a friend had her violin mistaken for a trombone, by a musician...

I used to play the flugelhorn and when people asked me what i played i used to say flugel and they used to look at me as if i had 2 heads or something. I then had to go on and explain that its similar to a trumpet and then they would start to understand.
Petite Joueuse
My bass recorder regularly gets called "drain pipe"!!

Hey jess,
You think people mistaking your viola for a violin is bad? Wait till you hear this one! My daughter's classmate who PLAYS the violin mistaken a VIOLA for a VIOLIN!!!!!!!!!!!

liebe_klavier
great....when i tell people and friends in hong kong that i can play the organ...they haven't got the slightest clue about it and regard it as an electronic piano....or something along those lines.....the worst is...they thought organ is "the vital organs in the body"....

People always think my double bass is a 'cello smile.gif
kiwiCello
My flute has been mistaken for a clarinet in and out of the case, as well as an oboe.
My friends clarinet has been mistaken for a flute, oboe and saxophone.
My cello has been mistaken for a giant guitar, violin, viola, mini double bass and a harp. Plus my non musical friends have asked why I don’t go to brass band practices with the cello at lunch time, it takes ages to explain to them why not.

Some people are just clueless.
