One of my students wants an electric violin for Christmas but his family don't know which one to get him. They want to spend about £200; he already has an amp and effects pedals etc as he already plays electric guitar.

Does anyone here know the best ones in that sort of price range?

I have a cheaper model Stagg. My amp is a guitar amp and it sounds like a guitar which is not good. When played through a good amp it sounds amazing. I will treat myself to a better amp sometime.

I 'may' be wrong but unless it's second hand they maybe be unable to buy one so cheap???

I have a Yamaha SV-120 which I am very pleased with. I've used it only a few times through an amplifier and it can sound really nice however most of the time I just play it as silent or with headphones.

I'd definiltey recommend one of these if it fits within budget (maybe even a second hand one)

I've been looking into electric violins too (I have hopes of Father Christmas) and I'm wondering how silent they really are when played with headphones? Is it realistic for practice at unsocial times or is there still a lot of acoustic sound?
