i just received my grade 8 results and i only managed to pass.. i got 25 24 25 for my pieces n frankly i think i deserved better 'cos the examiner didn't give any comments to support his marks. his comments were all apparently good. he even said that my 3rd piece which was sacro-monte by joaquin turina was "exciting" but the marks were very "exciting". i'm quite disappointed and so is my teacher.. i just wanna know what everyone thinks.. if i should appeal and what the process requires.. or should i just shut up and re-take it?

I don't really know, but wouldn't it be easier just to have another go?
Is appealing easy - or worth the trouble, I mean you must have worked very hard, but you haven't lost your talent through the exam, it hasn't taken it from you, so it must be easier to resit, wiser but worried????

those marks aren't bad at all!!!!!
besides, do you really want to go through the hassle of appealing? im not sure how the appealing works... how can there be remarks when the examiner is the only one who's heard you play?
maybe he was a bit of a mean examiner. it happens sometimes! my friend did grade 8 violin and got 101 overall, she was really disappointed...
i'd either settle for the marks you got, or retake the exam... it's a lot of stress but i think it's the best option.
good luck! xx

don't agonise about your result - move on. Lots of people's results aren't what they expect, for many reasons - sometimes due to the examiner, sometimes due to how you feel and play on the day. You'd probably get loads more out of looking at new repertoire, maybe thinking about the DipABRSM, or a similar goal. Put it down to experience and move on. Good luck!

If you badly wanted to do well then just retake. Don't appeal. It's a big hassle. 25/24/25 isn't that bad what happened in the other tests? If you flunked in Sight Reading I've heard that examiners deduct 1-2 marks from your pieces as well....not sure about this though.

There's no watertight guarantee that you would get higher marks if you did retake the exam, so I definitely wouldn't recommend going that route.
I agree totally with what Zibyll wrote. Musical life as I know and love it (singing and playing with friends, finding out about new music that I can get involved in etc.) doesn't depend in the slightest on exams. Move on and enjoy it. You didn't mention what instrument you play, but with grade 8 technique on any instrument there should be a good range of chamber music repertoire within your grasp, waiting for you to explore it if you aren't already doing that.

I would love to pass my G8...roll on March...
Why do you want to re-take or appeal? Is it important you get at least a merit/distinction??? It will only take time and hold you back - move onwards and upwards.

thanks to all who wished me luck =) and thanks also for the comments...

ummm yeah i did flunk my sight-reading. lolz the examiner said "sight reading requires consolidation to take you to the next category" or something like that.... thanks for the info rupayan.. i guess that's what pulled me down... and it's true that appealing could be quite a hassle..
i'm just not satisfied as to why the examiner didn't give a proper comment for the pieces.. i have no idea what to work on..
anyway, thanks again to everybody
