Full Version: Exam Results - What Is It About Me And 2 Marks Off?

I got my Grade 1 flute results today - passed with merit party1.gif I'm very happy with this as I thought I only would have scraped a pass but apparently I was 2 marks off a distinction.

This 2 marks away from thing is really starting to haunt me. I was 2 marks off a 1st class degree, 2 marks off a merit for Grade 2 violin and now 2 marks off a distinction for Grade 1 flute.

Anyway, I'm thrilled with my flute result (more than my violin one but that's another thread) so am off riding to celebrate and then stuff my face with chocolate cake rolleyes.gif

Congratulations!!! Think about it this way, 2 marks off distinction is better than 3 marks off, and if you'd got one mark off it, then you'd be even more annoyed, so either way, you win biggrin.gif Enjoy the cake smile.gif

I remember reading here that you don't usually get one mark off a merit or distinction so they either mark you down or up if you got 129 - so you might have been 1 mark off instead of 2?

I've heard that too, but not on here. Why would they mark you down though, surely they wouldn't knock off a mark just because you were borderline?

Hi Blackbird, I've just been reading your other thread, so congratulations on passing TWO exams in one session, and getting a high merit in one of them! I think you've done brilliantly! hurrah.gif

Funnily enough, that makes sense to me.

While 128 marks is a borderline Distinction but you wouldn't feel like "why didn't they mark me up" whereas with 129 marks you would definitely be wondering "why didn't they mark me up".

Well done! That's a great score. party1.gif

I got 128 for my first ever exam - grade 3 piano. I didn't realise I was even close to getting a distinction because I had no benchmark - and teacher saying 'you'll never make it'........ I thought she meant I wouldn't pass! ph34r.gif Which is why I ended up doing grade 4 next sitting....... rolleyes.gif

128 is a score to be proud of. Well done.

Well done!

I was told by a teacher that examiners don't give 119 or 129 because that leaves it too open to claims of "why not the one mark up?"
so in effect 118 and 128 are very very good marks where on the day the examiner didn't feel the performance was quite Merit or Distinction.

so you should be really proud of the result!
Well done.

I know exactly how you feel - I got 118 for both my grade 1 and 2 violin.
