Hi, I just received my letter today confirming that I've enrolled on the next residential CTABRSM and just wondered who else is going? I'm really excited but incredibly nervous about it. I'm very new to teaching - just about a year when we start - and have the minimum 5 pupils so I very much hope this will give me confidence. At the moment I sort of feel a fraud for not having any teaching qualifications!

Looking forward to hearing from fellow students!

That sounds really exciting. Will it still be held in the best county in the country - Warwickshire? smile.gif

I usually go and do my hour and a half Kodály session (although they will insist on calling it Kindermusik mad.gif ) so I will meet you then, singing nurse!

It's where Hammerklavier had his Road-to-Damascus experience four years ago...

I'm sure you'll have a great time smile.gif !

Eeep, how long have you got, jacob?? tongue.gif wink.gif

In a nutshell...Zoltán Kodály was a 20th century composer and educationalist who felt very strongly that 'music should belong to everyone' and who realised that the voice was the instrument we all possess and was therefore the best way to bring music to the most people. 'Music through singing' would maybe be the shortest way to describe the approach.

He gathered together the best educational principles and teaching tools and techniques (many of these were developed by his students).

There is no 'Kodály Method' as such - just his inspirational writings and the above principles, tools and techniques (the most widely-used and known being rhythm names and relative solfa). How the whole thing is put together is very dependent upon the personality and skills of the teacher - there are good and bad Kodály teachers, as in any other subject or area of music.

Discovering it changed my life and bringing musical skills, knowledge and understanding to as many people as possible remains the driving force in my existence.

I wrote an article about it called 'The Kodály Experience' which was published in the May 2003 issue of the AB's 'Libretto' mag - you can find it on this website - it will give you a bit more info and background.

Many thanks for your interest and apologies for going offTopic.gif , singingnurse!

Hi Singing Nurse

I am not going on the residential course but am presently on the Part Time CTABRSM in London. It is fantastic - I have only been teaching for a couple of years and only 6 pupils - it has taught me so much already, you will love it. Cyrilla's Kodaly/Kindermusik teaching is fab too - really interesting. Hope you have a great time! smile.gif

Hi Singing Nurse,

I'm going as well and want to get up there the day before to settle in before we start. I have done the TME course but am really nervous about this one. What instrument do you teach? I teach piano.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Hi Singing Nurse and Tasha,

I'm also going to be arriving the night before, looking forward to meeting you both, I teach woodwind and piano but am in the woodwind group.

Really quite excited about it all, but nervous at the same time!

There's nothing to be nervous about, honest! Although I didn't do the residential because they didn't do it back then.

You may find you react a bit in the first few days to the flood of information coming at you. My friend and I felt we were being brainwashed for the first couple of days but then we got over it and absolutely loved it after that!
