I've decided to take my grade 4 piano next session, and think it might be a good idea to get a teacher, in case I fall into bad habits; but don't really know where to start looking. Is it a yellow pages job?! Thanks

Word of mouth is usually the best way. Do you have any friends with children who learn? If you ask in your local music shop they should have some idea of who is teaching in your area. Good luck.

You can also look at the ISM Register or the UK Piano site. Some libraries also carry lists.

They are both good suggestions. I have just started piano lessons again after 30 years, and found my teacher through the local music shop. Like you, I'm hoping to take Grade 4 soon, but fear I will need to put a lot of work in - I have started 2 of the pieces, but will need to work very hard at sightreading, scales and aural. I found my first lesson very useful - I had been making mistakes with timing I did not know about.

I plan to start looking for a teacher after the new year. One of the music shops in Cambridge publishes lists of teachers so I don't think I'll have too much bother in finding one but first I need to get my piano tuned. It has been moved and the bottom notes are half a semitone out and the upper notes are beating in an irritating way. I also need to switch my head back into piano practice mode. I haven't played seriously for a year.

Try Googling "Piano teacher in x" where x is the county in which you live. This will put you in touch with all the websites with teachers in your area.

I found my piano teacher via www.musicteachers.co.uk. I chose her because she lives closest to me - lucky dip really - but she is excellent! Violin teacher was recommended to me but he's listed on the website too - excellent as well.

Let us know where you're based - there may be a forummer who teaches or learns near you.

Thank you very much all for your suggestions. I actually live in 'spritely' Leicester! smile.gif

When you do find one, make sure you feel comfortable with him/her. It takes a bit of time to get used to the one to one teaching I found.
Word of mouth is good, thats how I found mine. I was 56 at the time and knew nothing ie where middle C was. Good luck and enjoy wub.gif
