Hey, I'm a newbie!!!
Right, I have a bit of a problem here. I am playing the old violin syllabus which i can do in the exams in spring at the very latest. Thing is, my teacher reckons i should start the new one for 2005 because she thinks i will get bored playing the same old songs until march or whenever the exams are. But I am a bit worried that i won't learn the pieces in time if i start the new syllabus, but if i carry on with the old one, I will HAVE to take the exam in the spring, and i don't know whether i will be ready cos i haven't learnt all the pieces or scales yet.

What should i do?
Please reply!!

Welcome to the forums Verona!
I have had this problem myself a few times and I think you should DEFINITELY start the new syllabus- that way you can learn some new pieces and you won't be in a huge rush and rush into things you shouldn't.
But that's just my opinion!

The other way to do it is once you have learnt your pieces take a break from the for a few weeks and come back to them fresh a bit nearer the exam.
This can work quite well.

If you have already started working on pieces from the old syllabus you should stick with them. You didn't mention what grade it is... Anyway you'd have plenty of time to be ready for the Spring exams. I agree with sbhoa....keep working on them and take a break if you get ahead.

That's what i thought, but my teacher thought i should start the new one. Maybe she thinks i won't be ready in time or something.
I'm on Grade 5.

Welcome Verona!
I think both suggestions are ok. Unless you really love the pieces that you are already playing. Maybe you could ask your teacher to play the new ones and see if you like them better. I think the best bet would be to choose the pieces you love best, regardless of the time... unless they are technically too difficult for you to master in the time allotted.

Yes, I agree with violin-Ann. Work on the pieces you like most, whichever syllabus you like the best. On a personal note, I am not too keen on the new Grade 5 pieces. I have just played through them all. Any other opinions on this!!!

I heard my friend playing them. They sound quite ok. But then I have not heard the Grade 5 pieces for this year. If Grade 4 pieces are anything to go by, then I would say this years' pieces sound more melodious and next year's pieces are more technical... and I prefer the former.
