Here is my beloved Martha!! My extra special Christmas present! wub.gif

I've had her for ten days now and can't put her down. The sound is developing already and to me she sounds lovely and nutty, especially round the D string with the E string end sounding really sweet. My teacher says the sound will improve still over the next year.

I never thought I'd be able to afford a hand-made violin but it might be worth tracking down local luthiers because she wasn't as expensive as you'd think! I'm going to Mr Duthie's workshop next week to see how he makes them which will be fascinating. Oh and I forgto to say her pegs, tailpiece and chinrest are all rosewood... so pretty.

Apparently her unusual 'f' hole shape is based on a Magginni pattern and I'll find out about her other models next week.

For my fingers the only problem is the strings are slightly too far apart at the nut (only by a fraction) so he might be able to cut a new nut for me to make it easier for me to bridge two strings with one finger.

Other than that the effect on me is delightful; I can't stop playing her and my intonation is suddenly so much better too!!

(Off to practise..... the Bach Double and some SCALES!!!!)

I agree. It's very nice to meet you, Martha. blush.gif (But please, don't post too many pics of yourself - my owner is far too easily led astray sad.gif.

Yours, Pierre x

Wow! it's lovely

Beautiful! And the sound will continue to improve all the time. Getting a new nut for it is not a big job.

Bach double already??! Good heavens, Lottie, you must be a teacher's dream pupil! Now, I think you need to record yourself for the forums recordings page, don't you?

Martha is pretty - I like those F holes.

laugh.gif My teacher told me the Bach Double is about Grade 6 which nearly scared me back into the woodwork! I'm only doing Grade 3 in March! I'm playing the first movement quite fluently although the three bits in third and second position I can only do slowly. And I've just started the second and third movements really slowly. But it's one of my favourite pieces for violin and I'm thrilled to bits to be playing it.

I've sketched out a 'portrait' still-life of Martha draped over a red backcloth that I'm going to paint in oils soon - being an artist I like to have paintings of all my family on the walls wink.gif

Wowee biggrin.gif How nice!

Earlier in my music lesson (well it wasnt much of a 'lesson'). I was on the forums and well, i'm known in my music class for being completely obsessed with violin. When i saw your thread i said out loud 'ooh a picture of Martha!' getting me a rather odd look from my teacher, then i clicked the picture and my teacher's like 'Cara, oh no... please don't tell me that whilst everyone else is on youtube watching xmas songs you're looking at pictures of violins?!'
haha

I can't help it - I've realised that I'm as passionate about the instrument as I am about playing it. Just now I'm reading Tony Faber's book 'Stradivarius' which is absolutely fascinating - it's a really lovely read and tells the story of early violin making with some wonderful anecdotes. I really recommend it smile.gif

p.s. blush.gif She's the colour of clover-honey and not orange like these photos have come out... she's like untreated pine with a slight suntan laugh.gif party1.gif
