Has anyone here taken the jazz exams with abrsm?
I have just bought a abrsm jazz piano book grade 1 and 2. It has simple pieces with areas which you can improvise using the scales you must learn (towards the back of the book). There is also a CD which you can listen to hear examples.
I am about to take classical piano lessons with a music teacher and I wanted her to also take me through the jazz exams too. But to be honest I'm not sure what the examiner will be looking for. And I don't think the teacher has any jazz exam experience though I'm not sure.
Basically, I can improvise sort of - but I often don't use the scales the book suggests. And I also use chords in my improvisations which I have no idea the names of, and I notice the examples on the CD are quite simple improvs. Being a 'classical' student, the words 'jazz' and 'exams' seem to contradict and I'm just not sure what is expected of me.
Also the pieces in the book - are they performed in the exam? Because with classical pieces you usually have different pieces each year - is this the same with jazz?
