Hello,

Could anyone recommend which publication of Monti Czardas is required for abrsm violin grade 8.

There are several versions on musicroom, and they have 2 week ordering period.

Thanks
lottie

I agree, I heard it on Tuba (by Oyestein baadsvik (sp) and it sounded great. Haven't heard a good string version of it yet >.>

Yes, well, we bought the WRONG one...and then teacher and son decided to pick another List C piece anyway.

So... the syllabus says Monti Czardas, editions from either Ricordi or United Music Publishers.

Now that the syllabus has been out a while, most places seem to be in stock, and they have fuller info on their sites.

But...when we ordered, there were two Ricordi editions, and we couldn't figure out which was the right one. So we ordered the UMP one, which turned out to be from the CD Solo Series. Maybe there is a better edition out from UMP, but I would avoid this one - it's a simplified edition, and surely not at Grade 8 level. (Son Viohazard already had a Japanese edition he'd played before, so he could compare it).

I *think* the "Celebrated Czardas" edition from Ricordi is a better bet, but you could always email either the ABRSM or the vendor to check.

Sorry to give a list from a particular online vendor, but here are a few more details on both the Ricordi and the UMP editions.

I loveee this piece!
I can play the first page but haven't dared to go further ph34r.gif One day!

Have you tried sheetmusicplus for it? It seems to have almost everything x_x Though it is from America, so, don't know how long it'd take to arrive...

Why not get it from Brian Jordan instead? If they don't have it in stock they will order it for you - their service is excellent and I use them regularly.

Sorry but I'm not so impressed with Maxim's rendition with all the bass players. Some of the bass playing is out of tune and quite honestly I don't think the whole thing quite comes off. I love Vengerov but just not this.

Violinia, do you know which version from which publisher is the best bet? The original poster was not sure which edition to order, and we had the same problem when we tried to order it too...as a teacher, do you have any more details to help people get through the guessing game and order the right edition?!

Thanks!

OFF TOPIC, I'm afraid - sorry OP, hope you don't mind.
Watching this, it's all very impressive etc and great fun - but is it really Monti Czardas? Is it not more Fantasie on Czardas?

Is it really Monti's Czardas? Sigh......

Is this what it's come to, that if a musician doesn't play the exact notes on a page of printed music, then he's playing something else?

One big sigh.

So what did you think of Roby Lakatos' version then? Great fun but not really Monti's Czardas because he plays around with the melody too?

I've owned two publications of this piece; one was the Ricordi one with the red cover (Editio Musica Budapest) and the other was the Celebrated Czardas Ricordi version. As far as I can remember both are exactly the same and are also exactly the same as the recorded version on the Grade 8 AB CD, but a quick call to the AB will point you in the right direction.

Does that mean I can take Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues, play them on electric guitar with drumkit backup and improvisations and it's still Bach?
See, I would say that the answer to your question is that yes, he is playing something else ("improvisation on____", "fantasie on _____", "Bach plus a bit of cellocase" etc) - otherwise where do you draw the line?
I'm not being argumentative, I'm genuinely interested.

I haven't listened to the Lakatos yet, but I will and tell you what I think - but again, it brings up the question of where to draw the line.

I managed to find the text in musicroom's examination material section.
