I have two questions regarding Chopin's Mazurka in Bb, Op. 7 No. 1:

1) In measure 3, should the trill (Chopin uses the symbol tr) begin on the upper note C or on the principal note Bb? I have always started the trill on Bb, but in one reliable student edition, the editor mentions that this and the subsequent trills should begin on the upper note.

2) In measure 4, should the grace note come right on beat 1 or just before beat 1? I have always played it before, but the editor mentions that it should be played quickly on the beat.

Different pianists seem to approach ornaments in Chopin's music differently. I would like to hear your opinions.

I have always played it as you have and not what this editor has suggested.

Good to know that I am not the only one. I have read the editorial notes, and they make sense, however. And I have heard some prominent teachers mentioning something similar--not specifically on this piece but on Chopin's music in general.

Bar 3 - me too! (I.e, I agree with you and FC.) And so have two pupils who played it for an exam - very successfully. As for Bar 4, however, my feeling is that the notes would almost be played together anyway - though I've also heard them well separated, with the grace note well before the beat. I think it gives the piece a more mazurka dance-like feel, though, if they're close together, with the first one only slightly before the beat, if at all. I had an altercation about this with my own teacher, he being of the opinion that the grace note should be well before the beat. But being the stubborn cow that I am I told my pupils (who, unlike you, didn't care either way... wacko.gif ) to do it my way, and the examiner seemed happy with it.

P.S. I just found two versions on Youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FD5ap2lQnAA is a much, much better performance, form what I heard, which wasn't all of it, I have to say. But he does the grace notes your way.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXQgKZEstbE , isn't as good, but she does the grace notes my way! If you could imagine these put into the other performance, with much more emphasis on the first beat of the bar, what do you think?
