I'm an adult learner looking for a cello teacher in or near East London. Anyone have any recommendations or knowledge of websites that have a teachers register?

A lot of teachers aren't listed on web-sites but e-mail a cello tutor at your local Music Conservatoire (in London there are a few!) and they will recommend someone to you. This is a good way to compare prices/attend a few consultation lessons to see which tutor is best suited to your needs!
