Hellooo.
Have had a look at the grade 5 flute syllabus and don't recognise many of the pieces.
Can anyone suggest some pieces from it that they are enjoying playing?
I need to buy a few but don't know where to start.
Also, as this is the first year (that I know of) that my music shop is selling a book from which ABRSM have put pieces together in, does anyone recommend the grade 5 flute book, are the pieces nice?

Thanks,
Maddie

Hi yes there are some nice pieces in grade five book I personally like loeillet from list A there is a slow movement and a faster one. and I would be spoilt for choice with either circus pony nice and bouncy sitting under the fingers nicely OR march of the fool which I i liked from the day I heard it way back when it was on the syllabus in 1980s.
Not keen on the studys but would choose kohler. thee xtra pieces on the cd are number 4, 5 and 6 of list A and 4, 5,9 list B list C the extras are 4,5,7 on the syllabus lists, so I would say rather than buy loads of music the book although expensive is worth it in terms of being able to pick out the ones you like. Shame it doesnt have all on there!!
In answer to your second qu. this is the first year for the books which came out in September I believe. Happy playing

March of the Fool from List B in the book has been very popular so far. I like the studies from Fifty for Flute, so it's worth getting that as well. My personal favourite from the book from the List A pieces is the Handel sonata, but the others are good too. the Mozart is a nice alternative choice, from Music Through Time Book 4.

i'm working towards five too. I got the book when it first came out in September (hate the colour of the cover though). I'm quite a picky person and i find i have to enjoy something to play it well, as i think most do. I chose the Loeillet from list A as it seems to have some variation with the 2 movements. I'm also doing march of the fool from list B, also from the book, however it is a very popular choice. I'd say it is a lot easier now that more of the pieces are in the same book, its a shame that not all the pieces are though, but they are on the CD so it gives you an idea.
The book, i'm not sure the studies are so good. I quite like boiling point from list c (which is in the book)because it is lively and a different style/genre to the other pieces, it's got a latin feel to it...but then again, its seems to have a lot of scaley patterns and goes rather fast.
I'd have a look at the book first, cus if you find one for each section which you like in that then it can save you time and money.
Or, i think someone said you could buy the CD separately, you could check that out to see if its true and listen to them all first before you buy copies of loads of books you might not need!

My daughter is loking at Grade 6 for sometime in the future, she's not keen on the studies either.

I am trying not to fall into the "only use the book of selected pieces" trap as that is just too restrictive (and as we're stuck with them for YEARS I think I'd suffer from brain death/boredom pretty quickly). Besides I'm pretty good at knowing exactly which tunes suit which pupes.
The Handel IS a corker but the Mozza probably easier under the fingers (despite the impossible page turn). Jolly glad to see the McDowall back on - great fun (I shall try NOT to replicate my disaster when accompanying for this piece a few years ago when, on negotiating the da capo, my music went flying off the piano and landed on the floor. Pupe kept going admirably whilst said accompanist scrabbled about regretting the low-cut top and short skirt....Pupe got a merit and I got asked out by the examiner! Hey ho

) Personally I love the Arrieu but you need a mature tone and that little extra something to pull it off. I was brought up on the Kohler studies so that's a fave but the Bullard(s) will prove popular...
Right, where was I? *Looks at empty glass*

Lots of good stuff on the grade 5 list actually. Like Bagpuss I like the McDowall, it's a good piece and not hugely difficult. I don't know many of the list A pieces, but the Telemann's nice. The Berkeley's a good piece too. I heard circus pony the other day and have to say I think that will be quite a popular piece! The Bullard studies look like fun and students would like them as well as the James Rae.

Just to add to the great suggestions so far....Bryan Kelly's Whistling Song in list B is lovely. It changes time signature a lot (starts in 5/8) but it's a nice happy tune.

Just bought the book. I like the look of the "study in C" piece. (if my mind serves me correctly, i think thats what its called)

Have had a quick play of it and seems okay.
Thanks for all the advice.
Good luck to anyone who is/had pupils taking this exam anytime soon

Loillet, Whistling Song and Köhler for me.
My teacher is a baroque specialist, so the Loillet is really getting a lot of attention.
It's going to be quite interesting as this is the first time my teacher has helped anyone prepare for an AB exam and until I told her that I wanted to take it she didn't even know that the exams existed.
I've just entered for the spring session.

My G5 is doing Loillet, Rutter Pie Jesu (cos she's heard it on the radio) and Study in C.
Seems like examiners will be listeneing to a lot of Loillet!!

And a lot of Kohler! - I am also doing this one. But I've chosen the Peer Gynt rather than Loillet for list A, and the Whistling Song for list B.
I wonder whether anyone will go for the Hindemith....?

Well my teacher told me that if I really wanted to play the Hindemith, she could teach it to me but I could tell she wasn´t keen and neither was I.

the hindemith is fine as a piece of music. but it's horrible under fingers. personally, i dont like it both melodicly and rhythm wise. my teacher keeps threatening me with it when im moaning bout sections in my other pieces...i quickly shut up...

I'm getting on okay now.
At the moment I am looking at the loillet, and the study in c. But I'm not completely convinced by the B pieces, I have looked at the march of the fool and it seems okay ish.
May have to have a bit of a bigger look at alternative B pieces.
Hope evryones having fun preparing for gr5!

I have chosen Telemann - Arrieu

- Study in C. But I also like "Ringing the Changes"

for unaccompanied piece...
When the new syllabus came out, my initial reaction was "oh, no, hardly any nice pieces...( meaning no Faure )" but now, I am quite happy really with the new lists...

Sorry for bringing this thread back up again. Thought i'd give an update.
I've chosen Loillet, Arrieu and Study in C.
All are okay apart from the Arrieu needs work!
Anyone else doing grade 5 this term?

Good luck Maddielou and Dora's daughter.
I did the Loillet, Whistling Song and Köhler for mine earlier this year and got 25, 27, 27.
After I'd done the exam I tried the Loillet with a harpsichord accompaniment instead of piano a couple of times and I thought it sounded so much better - definitely something worth trying for fun if you can.

8th December,
A3 Attrib Handel - Largo and Allegro
B3 L. Berkeley - Prelude
C1 O. Ledbury - Boiling Point
I like these pieces well enough but I have got to the point where I can play them with my eyes closed (sometimes even with the right notes and close to the right speed!) and I think I hear them in my sleep! I will be glad to move on.

You picked flute up quickly, Robodoc. I remember when you first posted about it, and now you're doing G5
Good luck everyone doing G5 - spare a thought for me doing G4
