Hi Sue

What sort of grade are you wanting?

What about the Burgmuller Ballade Op.100 No.15 . That can sound fairly spooky.

Thanks

Sorry, forgot to say - grade 3 - 4

Phantom of the opera!

any of the songs really, probably the music of the night, overture or the point of no return. Not to mention the phantom of the opera itself.

How about Harry Potter. I read a review in the 'Piano' magazine recommending the latest 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' (Faber) - about grade 5 though. The first book might be easier.

There is a 'Spooky' Piano Time by Pauline Hall, but I'm not sure of the grade level.

Your pupil might enjoy some basic improvising. Shifting from black key cluster chords to single white keys inbetween can make very effective, creepy sounds, or something with augmented chords.

Try improvising around diminished 5ths. Emaj to Bbmaj for example.

Hedwig's theme (main theme) is also apparently grade 5 standard, although i would have said it was a bit easier.

"Jaws" can sound pretty good on piano smile.gif

A pupil of mine around the same age is learning the theme from "Godfather"...although I'm pretty sure he shouldn't have seen that film ph34r.gif

In the same book there is the Aria from the Goldberg Variations, and he recognised that as soon as I played it.... from "Silence of the Lambs" - hey ho. I can't say anything since I'd seen all those films well before I was 14 rolleyes.gif

Is he into computer games as some of those themes you can get on the internet and they can be pretty creepy. I know one of my 10 yr old pupils is obsessed with them...the more heads rolling the better. Some of them sound too scary even for me ill.gif

Oh as for computer games, my brother downloaded tons of "final fantasy" music off the internet some of which was incredibly difficult... He never practised any exam pieces, but he practised those... but then you'd have to check first whether your student had ever played it, or it'd be a bit pointless.
