Full Version: Do You Play Fingerstyle Ukulele, Or Chord Based Music?

What are you favorite ukulele songs? Where do you go for music?

Do you prefer fingerstyle or chord based playing?

Ever tried "slack key" ukulele? (Did you know there's a new book out on the subject?)

Is the sound of Hawaii your favorite, or do you prefer classical or modern music for fingerstyle playing? (I found a nice version of the march from "The Nutcracker" for Christmas for fingerstyle ukulele.)

Do you use a "low G" string, or play with re-entrant tuning? Do you keep instruments with both strings sets and tunings?

Have you ever tried slack key tunings, such as "Taro Patch" in G or C?

Would you ever consider buying a six string ukulele, or does it seem too much like a guitar?

Do you play ukulele with a group of others who play the ukulele?

Is your ukulele solid wood, or plywood, or a combination of plywood with a solid wood top?

Can the ukulele replace the mandolin in a musical group?

What is your favorite brand of ukulele strings? (Aquila?)

This threads for ukulele fans aware of the expanding possibilities associated with that lovable wub.gif ukulele!

Well the girls each have a Uke and youngest has a six string one. They have hardly had time to explore them as one was a christmas present and the other bought only a month or so before. Both are Plywood as is the 6 string which santa also brought.

I've bought all the Music off line except one book that I was conned into buying from a big Music Shop. It's a bit of a mixture of styles one's a Christmas book the other Hawaiian

It certainly won't replace the Mandolin in the folk group as my youngest plays it and she's stronger on it.

There isn't a Uke group locally that I know of although I suspect at some stage especially if they take off in schools that there will be.

Youngest has tried both chord based and finger style but prefers the finger style as she feels you can hear the tune more. She's probably mistakenly under the impression that chords work better for duets.

The rest of the questions are outside my experience sorry.

"Discovering the Ukulele" by Herb Ohta, Jr. and Danel Ho has some fine fingerstyle works that would be nice for an advanced beginner wishing to move beyond chord based playing. They requires some practice, but a few nights work generally yields good results. (The chord versions are also very good relative to sounding like the original work. I actually prefer the chord version of "Hilo March" to the fingerstyle version.)

"Fingerstyle Ukulele" by Mark Nelson is a bit more advanced, and requires a level of manual dexterity that is a little beyond me at present. (I have to approximate some of the finger positions.) The musical arrangements are rather fantastic. (I'd get it just to listen to the accompanying CD recordings by Mr. Nelson.)

Both include tablature and chord arrangements of all works. At some point I plan to experiment with these musical works with the Bach Bow and ukulele tuning on my violin.
