A good morning's rehearsal, duets and trios, with an oboeist and recorder player. Plus rehearsing some accompanying with a tenor. All went well, 4 weeks to the concert.

Yes, okay they were from a packet but the kitchen still smelled lovely. I was having coffee with colleague this morning so we had the scones warm with butter and jam and that made me very happy

Wednesday is a very heavy music day as schools here either have the whole day or a half day off so they pack in their other activities. I saw 10 of my pupils for the first time this term and every one was pleased to restart their music. It really was a great day. (Only hope it lasts!)

Going to a barn dance this evening with another couple who are our best friends. The music wasn't wonderful, but there was a lovely atmosphere and lots of children joining in. I love things where all ages can get involved, and there was even a lady in a wheelchair who was able to join in one of the circle dances thanks to someone pushing her chair. Feeling all happy and tired now.
Oh I just love Barn dances. I had one for my 50th birthday and had all my friends and their children. It was great because even the children joined in. That was over 3 years ago and my friends still talk about it and say it was one of the best nights out they had ever had. I am planning another one for my 60th!

I saw my daughter today and we went shopping. It as our first girlie day today in over 6 weeks without the children.

Thank you, Miss Ross. I expect I am supportive because I would have loved to do what my son has done!
I don't think I have ever recovered from starting guitar in junior school. Because I had done that, I was not considered for an orchestral instrument at secondary school, and have often regretted it - it wasn't as if I even liked playing the guitar! I would have loved to play in an orchestra, so when my son showed so much interest in the clarinet, I was happy to support.
I hope I would have been as happy to support him whatever he'd chosen to do, but I must admit that it's an incentive when your children are interested in things you yourself enjoy. I'm not sure his teacher thinks it is such a good thing for me to be involved - she thinks he gets too much support!

Thanks, skylark and Barry. He never dreamed he would get distinction. I think we were lucky to get the result today, as no-one else has posted. I seem to remember last summer there were several days between the first and last of the results.
Yes, I am proud of him. He has worked very hard for this over many years - all that getting up at 6.30am before the rest of us were up, so that he could practise. I've really missed waking up to the sound of the clarinet or piano since he left school! He's been lucky to have a great teacher, though; it makes such a difference.

Poor Sarah! We enjoy classical music, so son's playing was just a nicer alternative to the clock radio! He never played before we needed to be awake, and was around grade 5 standard before he started very early practices on going to secondary school, so we've always encouraged him. To be honest, it was less disruptive in the mornings than if he practised in the evening when we might want to use the lounge. His bedroom is minute, so he can't play in there.
I must admit, his sister can't stand the clarinet, but as she went on a gap year when he was 12 and has hardly been back home since, it hasn't been much of a problem.

My family doesn't get up till absolutely the last minute, so playing early could wake them up, but its not exactly my fault if they don't get up till less than half an hour before my brother has to leave for school. The odd thing is that they don't seem to notice me playing the recorder after everyone else has gone to bed

Perhaps that's quite useful! We don't like BerkshireSon to play after we're in bed, but we don't retire until about midnight, and he doesn't seem to mind stopping then. Actually, he rarely plays clarinet after 9pm; piano is the favourite later on - I think he finds it more relaxing than clarinet. He always says playing clari is quite strenuous and wakes him up.

There's no point in me trying to get the piano after about 8, as someone will always be watching TV, so I've taken to playing the piano until I get chucked out, then switching to recorder until I get tired. Its a stupid system though, because to get enough practice in the run up to grade 8, i'd get home, practice the piano, then recorder, then end up doing homework really late at night, because if i did it when I got in, I wouldn't have enough time for piano

One of the teachers at my children's junior school
always seemed to be there - I don't think he went home until the caretaker chucked him out! I never went into school after hours without seeing him. I expect he just preferred to work in school rather than taking stuff home, but the kids used to joke that he slept there too! He was certainly a very dedicated teacher and did a lot for the kids out of school hours.
