They've started selling Christmas cards in certain churches in York. I wasn't met entirely courteously when I went to practise the organ at the weekend...

It's simply called an academic scholarship and is a reward for getting really good grades at AS plus doing other things like extended essays around the subjects. (She's got a music scholarship too, but had that one last year.)

She must be in her A2 year then? She's off to a flying start - if you do well at AS and avoid resits, year 13 is much easier. It augurs well for brilliant results next summer!
Where is she hoping to go next year?

hmmm... it's doing a funny impression of it.
I'm happy today because I got 30/40 in my practice AS performance. It wasn't exactly the best mark in the class, but was a lot better than I was expecting, given how it went

I played Willie Wagglesticks in the end. The annoying thing was that for the whole of last week I'd been playing it pretty much note-perfect, then the day before i had to do perform it, it just stopped working
The first proper one is some time in December. I'm not sure what I'll play for it yet though, but it will almost coincide with my recorder exam, so i may decide to go for one of those pieces instead of piano (not sure quite how i'd break that to my piano teacher though

)

Well, it's a bit of a long story. She started out at Trinity and went for a choral scholarship. Then she was interviewed at another college - standard procedure methinks. But wants to do *takes deep breath* Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic! She's doing A level music but is really good at English and History and that's really where her enthusiasm lies.
BerkshireMum
Oct 16 2008, 08:45 PM
Well, that's different! I don't think we've had anyone interested in Anglo-Saxon since I've been on the forums. I hope she gets into Cambridge - it's less rainy than Manchester! (And a more manageable size!)
I've been surprised to find that most of the teenagers on here don't want to study music at university; they are just interested in the performing side. Then again, my son is doing Maths but loves his clarinet, so perhaps I shouldn't be surprised at all; maybe it's those who are more interested in composition who take music courses at degree level.

Yes you may have a point there. I had a star piano pupil who was seriously into composition and composed lots of stuff for choirs to sing at school and he went off to uni to study composition. And the others from my daughter's school who are going in for various uni music scholarships - (organ and choral) are not doing music as their degree.
