The thought of 800 or so school children getting soaked on the school's annual Sponsored Walk!
Schadenfreude, I know. I was always in charge of collecting in the money for the whole school (the overall total usually somewhere in the region of £8K-£10K) ; often finding myself sitting on the floor at home, surrounded by envelopes, sponsor forms, piles of cash, money bags and my own refined system of record-keeping.
Eventually though, the Unions put
paid to staff collecting money, for trips, school fund, photographs etc, farming the task out to the school's Finance Office, although I was still in overall charge, following up those who still owed promised amounts, keeping everyone informed of the running Tutor Group, House and School totals.
I did walk the course on several occasions over the years, but latterly it was more convenient to get all the admin sorted and then put my feet up for the afternoon or go and play the piano*.
*That luxury stopped when the Head of Music, knowing that the school would be rather quiet, in the absence of children, took the opportunity to get the piiano-tuner in!
