My daughter is still alive and in one piece! She was in a 10 car pile up on the A34 this morning - car is a write-off - but she's escaped with a few bruises and aches. I am so thankful to modern car designers, who make sure that the car absorbs most of the impact, and provide an airbag to protect the driver.

She's very shaken up and has spent a lot of the day in tears, but she is OK! hurrah.gif I am feeling a very lucky Mum tonight.

The thought of 800 or so school children getting soaked on the school's annual Sponsored Walk! biggrin.gif

Schadenfreude, I know. I was always in charge of collecting in the money for the whole school (the overall total usually somewhere in the region of £8K-£10K) ; often finding myself sitting on the floor at home, surrounded by envelopes, sponsor forms, piles of cash, money bags and my own refined system of record-keeping.

Eventually though, the Unions put paid to staff collecting money, for trips, school fund, photographs etc, farming the task out to the school's Finance Office, although I was still in overall charge, following up those who still owed promised amounts, keeping everyone informed of the running Tutor Group, House and School totals.

I did walk the course on several occasions over the years, but latterly it was more convenient to get all the admin sorted and then put my feet up for the afternoon or go and play the piano*. smile.gif

*That luxury stopped when the Head of Music, knowing that the school would be rather quiet, in the absence of children, took the opportunity to get the piiano-tuner in!
BerkshireMum
I'm really touched that so many people have bothered to post following my daughter's accident. Thank you all for your kind wishes.

She's still quite shaken, and has a stiff neck (which the paramedics warned her to expect) and big bruises on her knees where the front of the car concertina-ed in. And the thought of driving doesn't appeal at all, though she'll have to "get back on the horse" quickly as the public transport between here and Oxford is dire. But she's here, and safe, which is wonderful. smile.gif

Watching 100's of 13-18 year old young people sing and perform in child no. 1's school house music competition. Everyone sings and joins in and performs on stage- with enthusiasm and volume. It's so encouraging to see that you can get people to sing. It's the highlight of the school calendar- and they are all excited and keen..... and nobody opts out of this optional event!

Glad to hear your daughter's ok, Bershiremum. I think she'll be feeling a bit wobbly for a while. Son was in a car that left the road and rolled a few times when he was about 6. He was rather cuddly for quite a while, although completely unhurt, (except for a bruise from releasing seatbelt while upside down and effect of gravity!) I hope she feels better soon.

Using my oven in Hungary for the first time.

I have found that there are no numbers on the dial - so I'm having fun experimenting to find out how far to turn the dial in order to cook my chicken. For some reason this is making me grin quite a lot.

I have made an enormous step forward in my lesson preparation so will be able to watch television tonight. (French television is showing "The Tudors" and although I'm not sure about what I think about it historically we have been enjoying it for fun.)

The painter has turned up on the day and at the time he said he would - that in France is not just what makes you happy. When it actually happens you are ecstatic!!!

We have a delicious vegetable soup for lunch. I can smell it cooking.

Thanks, all! Daughter seems to be coping fine and is not given to nightmares these days - it was a different story when she was a junior; I will always remember her waking in the night after reading "What Katy Did" and saying, "I dreamed I was paralysed like Katy, and I daren't try to move in case I find out that it really is true!" I just managed not to laugh!

A few aches and pains still, but she is now driving to uni in a hire car courtesy of the insurance. I gather she is driving quite slowly, though, and doesn't like it when the roads are busy. It's not a bad thing for her to be more cautious, and I'm sure in a week or two she'll start to drive at more than 50mph again. I think it helps that no-one was seriously injured; after all, most of the damage was to cars, which can be replaced.

Many thanks to all those who have sent messages following my daughter's accident. It's been lovely to have your support. smile.gif
