I've just (about 5 minutes ago) started trying to learn the Vitali Chaconne, i only have a copy of the first page but i'm finding it very manageable, not too hard. Though i'm sure it gets harder after the first page!
I was wondering if it's on the ABRSM syllabus, if so - which grade? If not - what kind of level is it?
I read somewhere that it's grade 5 viola. Which surprised me as it seems harder/more technical than grade 5 level. I'm not sure if it actually is grade 5 viola though?
I looooooove it biggrin.gif

Your signature says you are grade 4...I learning this piece (with organ) at the moment and although I can do it it's not exactly sight-reading for me, and I got grade 8 distinction over 2 years ago...are you really playing the original version? If so, good luck with the bowing. It requires very good wrist and finger independence.

Yeah it's the original version - i can play much harder pieces than grade 4 level, but have been entered for the exam + it's my first violin exam, so hence why it says im grade 4. But you're right that the bowing is hard - it's hard not to turn the quaver string crossings into triplets - and even harder to get the right up bows and down bows in. But i love a challenge, i've been at that first page for about 2 or 3 hours now and have memorised it all laugh.gif I love it wub.gif
I'm finding it good practise for shifting, as it's full of shifts but simple shifts, like to 2nd or 3rd position and the occasional 4th.
I'd love to hear it on organ, i can imagine it'd be really cool. Though i'm guessing the organ version must be harder than the violin version maybe? Cause i really doubt i'd be able to play a grade 8 violin piece! I'd probably be able to scrape my way through a grade 7 piece, and get through a grade 6 piece without too much of a struggle - so i was guessing it would have been around that level.

You've only done the first page, though - it gets a lot harder. Very good practice, though. I think it was on the grade 8 list a few years ago.

Has been on the diploma syllabi at some point. In fact, I believe it still is. Don't be fooled by the apparent ease of the first page, it gets a lot lot more difficult.

I believe my friend played that for his recent LTCL violin exam. tongue.gif
