For instance, I'd love to hear renaissance polyphony sung in a gospel style ...

Why not? Just for an experiment. After all we don't really know what it sounded like.

Er - no - but I can't imagine it was sung in gospel style ohmy.gif

Sorry, just have a bit of a love affair with Renaissance polyphony...

Sorry if my response was a bit sharp.

I also love to sing Renaissance polyphony but I still think it would be a bit of fun to learn one motet or anthem really well and then try singing it in different styles.

Quite so. I'm not saying that I'd necessarily like the results ... but performing something in an unconventional way can often open up new aspects about something that we thought we knew.

I picked on renaissance polyphony as I often wonder if we've just got it wrong ... it can often feel far too restrained, and I'd just like to hear what happens when it is unbuttoned. I'm sure that this type of challenging boundaries could be applied in so many different ways.

People shouldn't feel offended or threatened ... it's not like anyone is trying to (or can) erase a revered piece of art. It's more about feeling comfortable about exploring different possibilities ... and if by doing this we can open some people's ears a little (even if some of the results aren't always successful), I think we should be brave enough to try.

Our little Renaissance posse did this with Pastyme with Good Companye for fun: we did it syncopated etc.

And did you swing it as well? Mind you I think that this is a jolly song anyway.

Hve you done anything from the Tudor Church anthem book?
