well you can always put yourself in for the exam by yourself... you can enter yourself online at this website...

it's going to be difficult if you don't have a teacher. get yourself a copy of the syllabus and decide which songs you want to do. then get copies of the songs and learn and practise them (play the vocal line on the piano if you can, and then hum the notes, and then start putting the words in once you know the tune). remember to find yourself an accompanist! instead of scales you have to do an unaccompanied traditional song, which means you'll have to be able to sing in tune without a piano - this will take some practising! then you'll need to practise sightsinging (get yourself a book of songs you don't know, and sing them all through once without playing the tune first) and practise aural tests (you'll need a friend who's a good pianist to help you with these). erm... i think that's all, i can't remember off the top of my head.

good luck!

How about...

Look at the syllabus, get what you need then ask the nearest you have to a singing teacher at school to help you get started. The main thing is to avoid bad habits so you'll almost certainly need someone to check you out. . .How far have you got on other instruments? . .The violin?
Good luck,

If you go to www.vocalist.org.uk you will find lots of information on singing, including details of books and courses in singing you can study from home. If you already play an instrument and can read music you should be able to learn the grade 1 pieces ok. Maybe you could take a few lessons in the beginning just to get you started on the correct technique and then take a few more lessons just before the exam for any additional pointers. I really wouldnt recommend that you begin singing without the help of a good teacher though, as bad habits are really hard to break and its very important to sing in a healthy way, but if you dont have any choice at the moment then the books and info I suggested should help.

good luck

I would advise you to find yourself a teacher especially if this is your first singning exam! They will not only help with technique, but also interpretation and style. They know what the examiners are looking for and will help you with what you need to work on.

Have a look on AOTOS website..(Association of teachers of singing) www.aotos.co.uk to find teachers in your area that have good reputations and training.

good luck!
