Hi all

I have found out today that I have been accepted on a clarinet performance degree course at London College of Music. At 46 years old and just become a grandfather this will be a complete life change but I am really looking forward to it. I would like to thank everyone on here that knew I was going for an audition and wished me luck. clarinet.gif

WHAT.....

My uncle is 65 and still referees kids football matches.

The person that taught me how to take apart and repair clarinets was 75. Now 78.

Go to www.woodwind.org and use the word Oldie. See what happens!

Damn right!

I don't consider myself old at 47. I'll think about it when I reach my father's age perhaps.

Eat more greens!

Carl - great news. Just do it - I gave up full time paid work at 43 to take an MA, then a PhD - now I teach at university level! It worked for me - may it work for you!

(But can you get your 10,000 hrs practice in...?)

best
Nick

Congratulations! Well done.
I'm an adult learner and it's nice to hear that it's never too late to get into music. I hope I'm one day I'll be good enough on the violin to do what you're doing!

Let us know how you get on when the degree starts!

I was once told: "Go ahead and build castles in the sky, then all you need to do is put the foundations under them".

If you know where you want to be, it's far easier to plot and traverse a route to it.

Good luck Carl in your new profession. It's an odd but equally very satisfying feeling when that first payment comes in for the services of your musical skills - enjoy that first moment, it makes all those years of practice and exam sufference worthwhile!

EDIT: I also heard someone else say this afternoon that 'achievement is a journey, not a destination'. I think we could all learn something from that.

OK, I'm in no position to comment on being a grandparent, but being an uncle comes recommended. Not only can you hand them back when they need feeding/changing/entertaining/have some other unidentified need, but you get all of the fun of playing with their toys without having had to go through any pain whatsoever. Ever.
