I like 3 octaves piano scales to be played in 6/8 rhythm.
in the string scale books there is a 3 octave scale written out in 3's
I would like there to be an example of this in the piano scale book too.
hands up who would support this?
thanks

Sorry I don't think you'll get your support, as the scales would really sound too bumpy played in that way!

of course scales could sound bumpy in any rhythm, but I don't teach bumps, I teach smoothness within whatever rhythm one chooses.
So why the grouping of 3's in the string books if they arent to be played in 3's????
And why 3 octave scales if they arent to be played differently to 2 and 4 octave ones?
6/8 has a lovely feel to it, with or without bumps.
Time signatures do not imply bumps, whatever they might be. smoothness, and a sense of flow and a sense of circular playing can be acheived without bumps.
what nonsense saying that bumps would be made?

In my days of piano grade exams all 3 octave scales were printed in triplets and had to be played that way, at my teacher insisted that they must. When the scale books stopped having them in this rhythm I contacted the board to query this. Their reply was that as long as scales were played musically any rhythm was acceptable.I allow students play in either 3s or 4s at their own choice and this has never been a problem

In the front of the Grade 5 scales book it says:
"To save space, the three-octave scales are printed over two octaves only; these may, however, be grouped in threes in performance."
Thanks for bringing this to my attention - it's so easy to ignore that page of comment at the start of the scale book!

I was just thinking... ( may b off topic but it is about music)
Wouldn't it be handy if there was a 1 big book containing all the pieces and scales together?? Obvously you would just have to like have a seporator for the scales but yeh.. Or the examinar has ur book for that time.. so...watcha think?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place..

Interesting idea about a combined scales and pieces book for each grade:
Pros:
One cheaper book to buy, less books to lose,..
Cons:
The issue in exams (that you mentioned) - the examiner having to be aware that a scales book is always in the exam room.
Some people don't do exams but do work through pieces books (or just the scales books, but playing other pieces) - so it would cost them more. I guess for this reason the publisher would be unlikely to do it.
However, if they made a combined book, I would buy it!
