Has anyone took their Grade 3 piano exam in this present winter session, just wondered how it went?

I'm taking Grade Three 3 on Monday next - but it's LCM and not AB as I'm not interested in scales.

Alicia....... I haven't seen the curriculum for LCM grade 3 piano, however, I'm surprised they don't cover
any scales.

Anisha....... I am taking it, but not this session, I've still got quite a lot of work to get through before I'll be ready, hopefully by summer.
I was just wandering how people had found their exam.

You can choose to do scales or the study ("Allegro" by Zipoli) - which is scale based and you don't have to memorise it.
For G5 I've doing Beethoven's "Six Variations on a Duet by Paisiello" - three pages of very swift scale-based music that's far more interesting than the scales option.

What made you choose the LCM over the AB exam, was it purely the scales issue?

Mostly the scales - but also the music is nicer. I have a huge pile of books from all boards and all grades up to 8 and LCM is easily the nicest music. I've never yet found an AB "C list" piece I'd like to play. LCM has a book for each grade which contains everything needed - scales, study, aural test examples, sight reading, most of the pieces (there is a list of alternatives). On the down side I think the standard is a little harder than AB or Trinty at each grade.

I've moved lots of my pupils to LCM recently and I think the standard is a little harder, too (the cha cha cha in the current LCM grade 3 was in ABRSM grade 5 not so long ago!) - but the music is so enjoyable that it gets practised more! The study option is in my opinion harder than doing the scales - like something you would find in a grade or two above -but it's good for people who just can't memorise all those different scales.
My elder daughter is also taking LCM grade 3 week after next - she started on the Allegro instead of scales and switched to scales about 4 weeks ago in despair - we're nearly there on them now! So good on you, it's not an easy option. My younger daughter is taking grade 1 ABRSM next week but has been learning Waldvoglein from the Grade 3 ABRSM because she loves it so much.
Good luck in all your exam taking!

You appear to be a very musical family MP, all the best for your children in the exams.

I am taking my first ever piano exam (grade 3) on Tuesday and am a little nervous. I feel confident at the moment but I'm sure I won't as soon as I walk through the examination room door!

I had lessons with several different teachers as a child but always gave up when it got too difficult, so actually getting this far is an achievement in itself for me!
Good luck to everyone who is taking an exam this session!

Thankyou very much. Just took my exam this morning and I think it went reasonably well. I fluffed up parts in all my pieces, but not too much, and managed to get back on track afterwards so I hope that counts for something!

Caz....... How did you find the sightreading part of the exam?

Dare I say... quite fun actually! I think the piece I was given was a minuet, so it was good fun to play (albeit only 8 bars long!) I took it slowly and managed to remember to put in dynamics. I know I messed up slightly, but carried on and smiled!
Really it wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be.

My sightreading was fine too, a nice tune actually - & I've just remembered the examiner told me not to play it too fast - which I guess means that I hadn't definitely failed by that point

or he wouldn't have bothered saying that (?). After that I think I did very well on the aural so I might have redeemed myself.

I hope you get the result you want Alicia.

How long do the LCM take to let your know?

I believe it's a few weeks

- they don't have an online thingy - which is good as I usually start checking the AB online results every few hours after an exam.
Good luck to us all for G3 Piano - we must meet back here with our results. Fingers crossed for good ones.

I'm just reporting back with my result. I got a merit (125), which I'm very pleased with!
