example: suppose your key signature is C Major (all naturals). if there is a B flat in the bass cleff that is one note before a B (no sign at all) in the treble cleff (in the same measure) is that B in the treble cleff natural or flattened? or is it an error on the music itself?

I don't think that the treble B is flattened... help I'm confused now too! laugh.gif

It would be B flat if it were on the same line (eg, both notes the B below middle C) - I presume that's what you mean, as accidentals apply throughout a bar to notes only on the same position on the staff.

That is B natural. However, there may be really a printing mistake. You better find some recordings or midis to check it if you can.

If the B (with the flat ) is in the same bar with the other B, then its a flat.

Only if the two notes are the same pitch.

Accidentals carry on to the end of that bar but only at the same pitch.

Interesting question though from pianopymp...I assume you mean that the B in the treble clef is the SAME B as in the bass clef? In this case it should in theory be a flat, but a well edited piece of music would have a flat sign in brackets to confirm this.....or else a natural sign in brackets if it is supposed to be flattened!!

You can usually tell from listening, but not always huh.gif

Yes, that's what I thought, only expressed it rather badly!!

For a good listener, it should be always!

Not necessarily... sometimes there is something there which you are not expecting.

Can you give some examples?
