I was wondering if any of you might be able to help me? I currently have a full size Hofner H7 violin that I'm trying to get rid of, and as I'm not a string player myself, I've no idea what a good asking price is for it.

Is anyone familiar with this brand who knows roughly how much it's worth? (complete with bow, shoulder rest, case, and even a little rosin!)

Many thanks

I've had a look online and it seems to be a reasonable entry level fiddle. You can probably expect to get between 80 - 100 UK for the outift, I would think. I don't think the brand is very well known in the UK, though, so you may find it difficult to sell.

The simple answer is, 50% of the RRP, absolute maximum, and only if the violin is in mint condition and is a current model (which i assume it is). That said, i couldn't find the violin online so I am none the wiser.

They seem to go for around 400 US online, Liz - so I'm reckoning on 200 UK - the varnish is 'hand sprayed on' which made me snigger, but overall it seems like a nice entry level fiddle - maybe suitable up to grade 3/4. I think 80 to 100 UK is the max you could hope for, but all in all it really depends on the brand and as it's not known in the UK it will, I think, be harder to sell - no?

Thanks for your posts - that's really useful to know. It seems a pretty good instrument from what I can tell, but as I say, knowing nothing about strings I hadn't really a clue where to start! I'll pop into a couple of local music shops and see what they offer for it (if anything)! unsure.gif

Well, at one stage Hofner was well known - it's just that in those days they were German. It sounds as if it's direct competitor of the Stentor Conservatoire in which case, yes, £80-£100 would seem about right. it's hard to say much more without pictures (including of the case).

I doubt whether a music shop will offer much, VC, you might almost do better to try ebay.

As a general rule music shops offer peanuts because they will then be selling it on 2nd hand and trying to make a profit doing so- the price you can realise is dependent on the effort you want to put into selling, but I would try a small ad in the local paper or the noticeboard of any school you have contact with first. Or, as Liz says, ebay.
