I can't achieve an even tone on my teachers piano. Compared to mine his piano is really sensitive and when I practice at home even if I think I have an even tone it doesn't come out the same way on his. I can't afford a new piano, and i was thinking about getting a digital with the same sort of touch but other than that I'm not sure what to do. It would take me at least a couple of hours solid play on his piano to 'learn' the feel of it - which I would never have the opportunity to do.

A digital would not solve the problem. The touch is sensitive - but not in the same way as a reasonable quality grand piano, or the very best uprights.

You say there is no way you can afford a new piano, but actually you don't necessarily have to pay massive amounts for a second hand grand piano. Lots of people no longer want them taking up space, so you can often get a bargain. Well under a thousand pounds can pick up a nice baby grand from one of the lesser names, and a couple of hundred pounds on a service will put it back into good condition.

If that is too much money or it would be too much effort finding the baragain, then is there any way you can arrange to do few hours a week on a good, well-maintained grand? Say at a school or college. Also church halls, village halls, ballet schools, amateur theaters often own very fine instruments - very underused - and you may be able to arrage to use them for a small fee.

I once bartered my services with an amateur dramatic/operatic society (playing for rehearsals of a musical) for practice time (on a concert size Bechstein). Another time, working on a contract in London, I got to use the piano at an Adult Education Centre where I was studying a language course, in exchange for paying for its regular tuning.
