I am a musician with a BA in Musicology and have passed the ABRSM Diploma in Violin Performance as well as the grade 8 in Theory some years ago. Currently, I am preparing for graduate studies in Composition. I have already been accepted to some institutions.
My main consideration has to do with my piano skills since I have only passed the grade 5. Is this an adequate level for graduate studies in Composition? As far as the keyboard harmony, what is the required level? Any answer/suggestion/information will be welcome. Moreover, I would like to discuss this issue with some composition students.
Which country are you from? I am asking this because schools in North America are different from schools in the UK.
Speaking from a North American perspective, most music departments are not too picky about keyboard proficiency for graduate students in composition.
If keyboard harmony is part of the graduate placement exam, you would most likely be asked to play some basic chord progressions, harmonise a chorale melody, and realise a figured bass. Theoretically, having Grade 5 piano gives you sufficient keyboard technique to do such tests. In reality, however, the more piano skills you have the better because you have to think fast and make your fingers respond quickly.
