I seem to remember last year there was a Jazz Summer School, in Leeds I think, did anyone attend?

I think this is something my duaghter would enjoy but the only thing I can find at the moment is a Percussion one at Leeds College of Music.

Is this the same thing - there's an advert in my school music house for a 'jazz improvisation week' at LCM last year (we're not very organised!), so that could be it? I recall it's for 14-19 year olds, is both residential and non-residential, but not sure, and LCM website isn't working for me at the second...

It might possibly be. I know someone on the forum had a child apply last year. LCM website is definately down.

I haven't seen anything advertised but I'll keep a look-out and let you know if I see something.

Last year the national youth jazz summer school rub by Issie Barratt was based at LCM. Unfortunately, it doesn't seen to be running this year - auditions were around this time - I guess due to lack of funding,

There are quite a few jazz courses of various lengths around. The only one I know of specifically for youngsters is the MehrClef course at Roehampton for 14-19 year olds (www.mehrclef.com). I did the adult version last year, thoroughly enjoyed it and intend to do it again this year.

What sort of timetable do you get TSax?

Last year there were 4 teaching sessions a day

Session 1 - split into instrumental groups for specific technique points
Session 2 - improv group 1, rhythm section plus horns, vocalists have separate session.
Session 3 - either repertoire groups (for returnees) or aural/rhythm/harmony workshops for first-timers
Session 4 - improv group 2, includes vocalists

In addition each evening there are performances where you sign up for slots and perform either with the groups you were taught in during the day, or groups that you've put together in any spare time you manage to find. There's also a couple of masterclass sessions where front-line get to play with the rhythm section teachers, and rhythm section play with the front-line teachers. One afternoon is free-time (although mine got rapidly filled with rehearsing and trying to grab 30 mins sleep) and one evening there's a tutors concert.

I should think the 14-19 year-olds course will be structured much the same. I think they used to have all ages mixed up, but last year decided they had enough to split into two separate courses.

You're right - it is expensive. Expensive enough to think carefully about if it's the right course for you at the right time. If it is, it's well worth the money. The teachers are all first-rate - teaching at places like RAM and Guildhall, you get a lot of tuition and playing for your money - that's why it costs a lot. For my personal situation it's worth it, but everyone needs to weigh it up for their own set of circumstances.

I'll look at it but would probably have to be next year, she's still only 13, so not old enough for this time.
