I just bought a new viola (German-made, 15.5", maker unknown, made in the 1920s, bright/warm/brilliant sounding, has lots of personality
). Yay! After playing it a bit, I think it needs new strings. When I got it from the shop, it had Thomastik Dominant A & D strings, and Vision G and C strings. I think that they sound rather strident and metallic-y. On my previous instrument I used a Larsen A, as well as Evah Pirazzi D, G, and C strings and I absolutley loved them. I don't know how they'll sound on my new instrument though; I don't really want to go bankrupt experimenting with strings. What should I do? Are there any good maker/combinations that I should try? Any suggestions are welcome.Thank you!!!
