Full Version: Another Recorder Question

Hello Wind section

I'm quite keen on starting to learn the recorder, probably the Alto.. or is it called Treble???

I know next to nothing about recorders apart from playing a descant for school songs when I was a kid.

I'd like a more mellow sound than a descant so thought a Treble would suit.

Anyway, the questions;

Where and what kind would I buy? Are the plastic ones worth it? (my budget would be around £100 for instrument and books).

Also, are there any 'start-up' books which are not too 'kiddy'? I have diploma level in clarinet so know quite enough to get me started from the musical point of view. There's also no teachers here so lessons are not possible. Also is there any Vivaldi/Bach etc that you can recommend that's not too complicated to get started with?

Any advice? (Thanks)
Maizie

But to quote myself from that thread...

For getting a recorder, a great place to look is Saunders Recorders. This is not just a site for the swish, expensive wooden recorders - there are plastic models in stock. You'll also find each brand discussed a little, and also smiley red faces next to recorders that Mr Evringham views as particularly good for beginners. Basically, if they stock it (smiley face or not), it's a good recorder (even if you end up buying it somewhere else tongue.gif)

If you want something that's more aimed at adults, there is a review of some popular methods here, though the site is American so you might find them harder to track down in the UK.
Again, Saunders have music and method books in stock too...

(charity shop music I mentioned in that thread, but it is usually descant).

Oh, and yes, treble=alto, descant=soprano biggrin.gif
