All rounds viewable by live streaming (or click "watch again" for earlier performances). Some fantastic performances this weekend. Highlight for me is Jiafeng Chen's stunning Pag 24.

I agree. Jiafeng Chen is certainly a front runner in the seniors for me from the ones I have seen. I was surprised that Amir Bisengaliev did not go through too.

Juniors are today and tomorrow. Senior semis on Wednesday.

I was lucky enough to catch one of his performances in the run up to the competion. A wonderful performance.

Thanks for the link, wouldn't have known otherwise and it's fantastic! Just listening to a junior, Sonoko Miriam Shimano Welde, who is so smily, it's lovely to see. smile.gif

There's some amazing young talent out there. Hope to catch some of the action 'live' this week (shame that I have to work tongue.gif ) - if not, then there's the closing Gala performance to look forward to. smile.gif

It seems a very strong possibility that the winner's surname will be Chen...!
My money's on Jiafeng.

I would think the overall winner will be announced after the finals on Saturday. The competition is from 7pm to 10pm so around 10pm.

My money has been on Jiafeng from the start.

Concertos to be played for the finals are:

Jiafeng - Tchaikovsky
Ray - Mendelssohn
Stella - Tchaikovsky (again)
Evgeny - Tchaikovsky (yet again!)

So no Lalo and no Prokofiev!

I think a concert with 3 Tchaiks might be a bit much!!!

So who won?

The website doesn't tell a thing blink.gif sad.gif

Oh sorry - just found the correct website now..... laugh.gif

What clever people - and so talented!

I was absolutely mesmerised by Chad Hoopes' Vivaldi - I don't think I've ever enjoyed it more. He really engaged with the players and audience - and clearly enjoys performing. And he's only 13!!! blink.gif

Ray Chen's Mendelssohn was pretty impressive as well! biggrin.gif Even more so given that he'd only had the loan of the violin for the day!!

Both worthy winners - but I'm blown away by all the young talent that was showcased in the competition and hope they all do well in the future. smile.gif

Am I alone in wondering why there are no British contestants? Well there's one but her name looks very Hungarian! Don't British kids have any musical ambition or dedication these days? You can't help wondering...

I don't know the reason, but the UK is always poorly represented in international violin competitions. Can't be the quality of teaching in the UK, as at least 4 of the Menuhin finalists are/were educated here (chets/menuhin/rcm).
(actually 5, forgot bisengaliev)

No it's not the teaching - it's the people who decide to go for it. And lets face it - judging by their profiles none of them seem to be British born and bred! Perhaps it's something to do with sheer hard work - or basic work ethic? Home life? Expectations? Whatever it is, it's got to be a cultural thing - you just can't ignore statistics like those...

On another note though - I see Mindy Chen did really well and am pleased about that. I've watched her a lot in the past on Youtube and think she's truly special.

sorry, for "finalists" in my post above read "contestants". It's quite an achievement to even be selected as a contestant in this competition.
