Whats the diffrence between a Partita and Variations?
joolsters
Well a variation is a set of pieces based on one theme (cue Paganini Variations or Mozart's variations on the theme of twinkle twinkle little start) Don't know the technical definition of partita but the Bach Partitas are a set of dance like pieces set in the same key.

Its actually 'Ah vous dirai-je Maman !' smile.gif

Yes you are right a Partita has several , usually dance like movements but thematic material is unrelated, unlike variations.

trigger happy fingers.

Yeah I used the proper title ('Ah vous dirai-je Maman') when I asked if my quintet would like to give my arrangement a try, and they gave me a puzzled look. Then I said Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars and they said yes immediately. It's like when I mention Largo from Dvorak 9 no one has a clue, but once you say the Hovis advert then everyone understands...*sigh*
