Hi everyone,

From your experience, how long does it normally take to prepare for Grade 2 (piano)?

Many thanks,
Aya
hello_cello
there isnt an asnwer, it depends on three things really
  • How much you practice
  • How good your teacher is
  • How quick you learn things

It depends partly on what your starting point is.

Are you a beginner? have you just passed grade one? there's a big difference.

Thanks. I will rephrase my question: how long did it take you to prepare for Grade 2? A.

But you still haven't given any information about your current level/past experience.

For a beginner who has just taken his Grade 1 exam, working hard, good teacher.

I can't remember.

What mark did this beginner get for their Grade One exam? Were all the parts of the exam equally marked - are there any weaknesses to work on? Does this beginner work hard everyday, most days, every so often? Does the beginner have a lesson every week?

Has the beginner asked their teacher, as the beginner's teacher is in a much better position to answer this question?

It usually depends on how good a grade 1 standard the player is.

For someone who learned pieces by rote, can't sight read well, grade 2 will be a big leap. For a good all round grade 1 standard player it's much easier to make the transition.

Then again, there are so many other factors, like being advanced on another instrument etc... I have a new pupil, complete beginner to piano but who has grade 5 in theory, violin and singing. After about 2 and a half months with me her general piano standard is about grade 2 already smile.gif

I started learning the piano in September 2006 though I used to play the clarinet several years before. I took Grade 1 piano in Summer 2007 and got 130. I started Grade 2 pretty much straight afterwards and took the exam Spring 2008 - I got 130 again. I'm taking lessons as part of a group course at a music college but don't have a teacher to help me prepare for the actual exams. I'll be honest and say that I don't practise as much as I should do! The thing that I found harder than expected going from grade 1 to 2 was the sight reading.

I hope this helps! biggrin.gif

It took me a couple of months. But I guess it doesn't really count because I'd already passed grade 4 keyboard. blink.gif

I started teaching someone piano in March 2007. He was about Grade 3 singing and had dabbled with the piano on his own at home. He took, and got a distinction in Grade 2 in March 2008, so he took a year from the beginning. He works hard, plays a lot, has a supportive family and is great to teach. If he continues this way I'm hoping we might miss out Grade 3 and try for Grade 4 in 18 months time. We'll see how it goes.

I took grade 2 when I was about 8 or 9. Roughly 1/2 a year to 3/4 to prepare.
