I'm aware that new piano syllabi are due to come out this summer. For the purposes of exams, is it permissible to take, say, one piece from the 2007-08 syllabus and two from the 2008-09?

My understanding is that it is not allowed.

The new syllabus is issued this summer but is not used until spring 2009 - assuming you are in the UK?

You can use pieces from the old syllabus in the spring session of 2009 if you wish, but I believe you can't mix them - and you must check the NEW syllabus for other requirements eg changes to scale lists.

agree.gif You cannot pick and choose across the different years of music. Maggiemay is right about which can be used when and also to point you to the fact that the scale requirements for piano change in January. You can still play the pieces from 07/08 in the Spring 2009 session but, at least as I understand it, you must do the new scale requirements which, I think, are due out in July or August, though you can find out more about them on this website.

Thanks both. I am not at all enjoying the prospect of having to learn the current G5 syllabus, save for one piece which I can already play. However, I didn't realise the new syllabus was redundant until the spring; and, rather than 'waste' that one piece I can play, along with the scales, I think I'll have to bite the bullet!

Right ... which is the one you already know and are (fairly?) happy with?

And which ones don't you like the look of??

I was quite surprised to find that I love ALL the (main) pieces on the current Grade 5 syllabus - I have already learnt five of them and have told my teacher that I don't want to move on until I've learnt the rest! Which one do you already know?

I can play the Jackson Street Blues from list C(3). I may be being a little harsh, but I'm not keen on list A. I've thought about giving the Handel (A6) a try; and, perhaps, the Romance (B3) or Mélodie (B4). It's not all doom and gloom smile.gif

You cannot mix pieces from different years. They say so in the Regulations, I think or somebody has told me by word of mouth.

It really is annoying that you can't mix them, but i guess i can understand why they don't want you to.

But to those who are already on one syllabus just as another is about to come out, where there would preferably be more time - t'is quite a sticky situation.
