I can't find any information anywhere on how many chords are generally used in a waltz... I wondered if anyone had any ideas?? is it as many as you feel necessary or only maybe 3 or 4 like in a pop song?? any ideas would be helpful!!!

I presume you mean how many different chords?

I think the reason you can't find a ready-made answer to this question is that there isn't one. It will depend largely, I should think, on who wrote the particular waltz and even then it will vary from piece to piece.

Can I suggest - shock horror - you find the scores for some waltzes and look through them, preferably while listening to them so you can hear the effect of the different harmonies. Or, if your keyboard skills are up to it, play through some on the piano.

You can't find an easy answer for everything at the click of a mouse, you know!

Thank you, I had thought of that, i've been researching scores, different and the internet books for several days now. I shall head back to my music room and keep going through my stuff, hmm, and playing them yes... I shall.

Great! Try Shostakovich as well as the obvious Strauss. Is this for composition?
