I think it's the woodwind finalists battling it out tomorrow (Monday). Tuesday is strings, Wednesday brass, Thursday percussion and Friday, pianists.
Did anyone see the Young Musician 30th anniversary programme this evening on BBC2?
I giggled when Nicholas Daniel said he's always been a follower of fashion, they then cued 'shower scene music' from Psycho and flashed up images of Nicholas in some truly hideous outfits.

Awww no - I missed it! I really meant to watch it too... OH never tells me these programmes are on because he hates them! (He's the only one who reads the Radio Times

) I was too busy reading the newspaper to notice the television!
And we're so backward here we only have four channels so we don't get BBC4

Is the final not on BBC2 next week sometime? I really don't want to miss that.
I ought to pay more attention to the TV

(no I don't think so)

It will be on iPlayer after it's finished, unless it's actually displayed live on the website. So going to watch it; good hopes for either of the clarinetist!

I know nothing about woodwind playing but that was not the result I was expecting

I thought the second girl would have won (Mel was it?) but was kind of hoping she wouldn't as from the clips they were showing I didn't really like her <me judgemental? of course not

>
Gutted I'm going to miss the strings tomorrow

I agreed with the judges! Which instrument was Mel playing? (You can tell I just pay attention to the music!)

She was the oboist (I think) I had it on in the background while I was doing the exciting job of ironing

I thought it was close between the oboist and the flautist, but I think it was the very modern piece that got it - it was daring and he pulled it off very well!

The problem I have with his second piece is that I don't know if he pulled it off or not as it just sounded incredibly strange to me!
Ah well, I'm just jealous as I'll never be that good at anything

Awwww
I listened to them online and thought Joseph Shiner was an outstanding clarinettist - was his performance not very good on the night?
I haven't listened to the flautist yet.
Many thanks too for the links - much appreciated

Edited to say: just listened to the flutey-chap and wow, he's just great LOL!

On the short extracts played I thought the oboist was going to win, but probably you need to listen to the whole performances to come to an informed choice.
I hated the way the programme was done though. About 3/4 of the programme was introducing the viewers to the players and showing us their "journeys", and only about 1/4 was given over to edited highlights of the performances. Given that the results were already known in February, the whole build-up just seemed fake, and dragged-out.
Why couldn't the BBC show the earlier rounds when they happened? - that would have built-up tension naturally, and allowed viewers to follow the players journeys and get interested in them.
As it is, it's like keeping the results of FA cup rounds secret until just before the final, and then just showing a few extracts of the matches.

What pieces did the flautist play? I didn't like him that much when I heard him online.

Yes, the performances for the category finals are all already on line. I'm just too lazy to listen to them all!
