Hmm, some of Vivaldi's concertos (Four Seasons, perhaps?) transcripted for solo violin?
Brahms's Hungarian Dances?

My mind's kind of blank at the moment.

How about some more clues? First of all, what have you already learnt from the current G8 syllabus? What pieces have you most enjoyed playing over the last year or so? What's the most recently-written piece you have learnt so far? The violin repertoire is huge and varied!

My daughter played part of the second sonata of Howard Ferguson for Grade 8 about 25 years ago, and I have loved it ever since. All three Brahms sonatas are great, and some of the movements (all of the G major and the slow movements of the D minor) are c. Grade 8; your teacher will know about the other movements. You need a post G8 accompanist for these works, though. If that's a problem, have a look at Bartok's sonata for solo violin. I guess it is harder than G8, but you would learn from it.

I would also try something new; since you have spare time, why not try something really different?

Try jazz, blues, spirituals, Eastern music...

wow thanks guys! my teachers given me Stravinsky - Chanson Russe for the moment cos its quite different to the things ive been learning before. Ive already learnt the Haydn G major concerto 1st mvmt, Bach partita no 2 (i think!), Frank - Sonata, Copland - Hoe Down, Kabelevsky concerto (but i didnt really get on with it) and Berkeley - Tocatta.

I will be doing a selection of those for the G8 exam - Bach, Frank and Berkeley is the most likely combination at this stage.

My friend has also lent me the music for the Kreisler - Praeludium and Allegro, so im gonna have a sightread through (!) that and see wot i think of it. Thanks for ur suggestions though - and if anyone has any other ideas they would be very welcome!
