I am not sure whether I am clear of mine. Last Friday I had the viva for my PhD in composition at the University of Reading. I am now waiting for my result. One possibility is that my thesis will be referred back for alterations, which may be major or minor. If, on the other hand, they grant me the degree without any corrections, then I have finished, except for graduating.

No not at all, you get to study which aspects you want. Year 1 is a little restricted in choice but years 2 and 3 are much more flexible. During year 1 i studied:
Orchestration
Harmony and Counterpoint
Histroical studies- covering medieval to classical
Ensembles
Music theory
Performance
And this year im doing
Composition
Orchestration
Jazz history
Editing early music
World music
You can choose from lots of different modules. It may depend on the uni tho, mine is great cos there is loads of choice!

I love world music!
What sort of stuff do you look at under that?

Im not sure to be honest, i dont start that module until semester 2 but i should imagine its just most of the styles of music from around the world which are not so dominant as others.

to liebe klavier: It depends on what your idea of 'limited' is! In universities, you get a much broader musical education i think, whereas in a consevatiore, it is based solely on performance,so it depends entirely on what you hope to get out of your time there. We do not get to do 'world music' at my music college....we might be missing out on a lot of fun!!!
ps..can i just add that i think your footnotes are a wee bit long winded..!!

It's kind of hard to miss...
I'm sure you all are proud of your achievements in music, but i also think that one should be modest too...nobody likes a show off...!

I don't think it matters in the least!

If I had two grade 8's (which by the way I don't at all) I would probably be pretty happy too. Its a fantastic achievement. I like figured bass too liebe klavier, although I find it quite hard to use! I've got to compose a Bach style piece for my GCSE and i'm trying to use it. Can you just play from it straight off

I suppose that's the general idea eventually but I find that pretty impressive!
