In the Grade 4 Aural sight-singing tests, are you supposed to sing the letter names of the notes (C, D, E, etc.) or use 'la la la'?
Thanks,
Carys

I think its what you're most comfortable with.

My pupils all sing to 'la' - but as long as you get the notes right, I don't think it really matters to the examiner how you produce them!

The regulations (
here) state:
| QUOTE |
| For any test which requires a 'sung' response, pitch rather than vocal quality is the object. The examiner will keep within the vocal compass of the candidate, who may sing 'lah' or any vowel sound or may hum. Boys with changing voices may whistle or may hum an octave lower. |
As Jo says I don't think that you'd lose any marks for saying the wrong words as long as the pitch is correct.

Thanks! I'm using the 'Aural Training in Practice' book and it didn't make it clear.

I believe it says in the syllabus that boys with breaking voices may whistle or hum.
