hey. Just wondering, were all you cellists taught regularly to play in the tenor clef, or is it something you picked up over the years? Thanks, biggrin.gif

I'm doing G5 this session, and one of my pieces regularly goes into the tenor clef. I have fingerings written all over some of these parts, and I have learnt where the notes are, so now I don't really read it as I know where to go (if this makes sense.) Tenor clef doesn't come into AB sightreading till G7, so I will be continuing practicing reading it so I am secure by then. My teacher told me a good tip is to look at the note as if it was in bass clef, eg that's a first finger E on the D string, and then knock it up a string as it really is a first finger B on the A string. Hope this helps smile.gif.

Well, I actually learnt tenor clef when I was doing grade 5 theory, as I took that when I'd just turned 10. So I think I learnt it in theory before it came up in practice in my pieces. Then, once it started coming up in pieces, it kept on doing so!

Yes, I wasn't very clear in my other post but I knew how to read tenor clef from doing g5 theory last year, so it is just a case of being able to follow it quickly.

Yes, I ended up learning tenor clef both for cello playing and theory pretty much at the same time. My teacher gave me a book just about it...with little exercises and things, but I found it just got much easier with practise. smile.gif

thanks everyone. I'm actually creating a new arrangement for saint-saens' "the swan", and didn't know which clef to put the cello in!
Thanks again,

Well, the point of changing clef is to minimise the use of ledger lines. so whichever is most appropriate.
