unfortunatly, this is very true but it is also quite interesting to see what grades other people are at and how long it took them to get there.

Hi! For clarinet I'm Grade 4 and I've learnt it for 2 years. I think the time range (under 5 years, 5-10 years etc) are too high.

I am doing grade 4 on flute and am learning grade 5 theory!

I've been playing for three years and I'm probably doing grade six at easter. I could do grade seven, but I started learning the grade six pieces, so there'd be no point in changing anything now! it's more difficult for me do to exams anyway, cos I'm living in berlin at the moment and it's difficult to do exams over here! I just did theory on the 3rd of november and that took ages to arrange! I hope I passed alright...

I've been playing the flute for 5 years and passed my grade 8 exam earlier this year (i skipped grades 2 and 6) so that's almost a grade a year.

I'm an on-and-off recorder player... I don't do grades, but I have a go at anything and everything!

I don't think that grades are the be-all and end-all.
I appreciate where people are coming from with regard to UCAS, i mean, those dreaded numbers... So many for an A, or B and there are boundaries for each university course...

Anyway, personally I don't think that exams say everything about your ability, because if you can play 3 pieces well, so what?

I have been playing the oboe for about 9 years did my grade 8 exam in the spring this year. Learning the pieces from the DipARSM level repertoire list at the moment.
