What is it with parents chosing instruments? Everyone I know who has had their instrument chosen by their parents either hates it or gave p as soon as they could to play another instrument, or worse give up musiv totally. I think it should be down to the child to decide which instrument they would like to play as soon as they are old enough.

I've always wanted to play the violin, ever since I was a little kid. I don't remember what started it, but I would always use to pretend I was playing the violin.

I was fortunate to have a piano in the house before i had proper music lessons and I used to fiddle around on it. My parents played a lot of classical music on the stereo system when I was young and I remember hearing the Debussy's Golliwogs Cakewalk on a CD once and I thought to myself I would love to play that one day. They also sometimes played jazz piano music which also influenced me.

This inspired me wanting to learn the piano.

The reason for the choosing the oboe as my second instrument was firstly I liked the sound but also my piano teacher also teaches the oboe as well. Now I have a combined lesson of piano and oboe. I also knew that I would stand a better chance when it came to playing in orchestras as oboists can be hard to find.

I'm glad I chose the piano and oboe because it is now paying off where I am being asked to play at weddings and other functions and being paid too!

My brother already played the piano so we had one at home, and I heard a tune on an advert on tv and went over to the piano and played it, and then i figured out pop goes the weasel and played that too, and it just went on from there (bit random really). With the cello, I went round the entire orchestra at school trying loads of different instruments, much to the teacher's annoyance, and just decided the cello. I started the harp because I wanted to play something that not many other people played. I've kind of started the flute because I really want to play something new and I have no money and my brother used to play so I got his (and his music). yey i love music. I'm going to begin playing the harpsichord in an early music group at school! And next year I'm going to start the violin.

it would be me myself to choose the instrument...not my parents...

I choose piano cos it rocks! Its got a cool sound and there are so many really cool pieces written for it.I cant remember how it started but my parents say I loved the sound of it as a toddler and have always wanted to play it. I remember watching the concerto finals of an international piano competition on tv when I was around 6 or something and thinking how awesome it must be to be able to play like those people.Didnt start until I was much older due to circumstances (ie.no instrument to practice on,couldnt find an affordable teacher etc)

after having piano lessons and having played recorder for a couple of years, i decided i wanted to play clarinet, but there weren't any spaces at my school when i was in year 4.

there weren't any spaces in year 5, but there was a space for me to learn trumpet. so i got taught trumpet by a tuba player (!) and then he moved away to become a priest. so then i was taught trumpet for a year my a horn player, and she decided i was music enough to cope with playing horn! so i started horn in year 7. which is pretty far away from clarinet!

but i saw the light eventually! lol tongue.gif

(i really think the instrument chooses you tho, if you try and play something which doesnt suit you, it just doesnt work as well.)

As a kid I saw (and heard) one of my older cousins play the piano. I immediately feel in love with the instrument. My parents saw my interest and started my piano lessons............. biggrin.gif
