Full Version: The Rose

Helen
We have been asked by our head of music, to think of some pieces that we could add to our choirs repertoire. Does anyone know if any choral arrangements of The Rose exist?

ps, im a bit new to the singing scene you see.

We sang that in 3 parts, but I think we wrote 2 more parts for it- an alto part and a descant-y part for the end. I'll check though! smile.gif

do you mean this one..... it's a christmas song of somesort... it begins like this:

"there is a rose of such viture....." it's a three part thing..... it's quite nice....
Helen
It's wonderful, i feel... a tear... coming on... *sob* Or is it just me being too soppy??!
No, as in:
Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger
An endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower
And you, its only seed

It's the heart, afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream, afraid of waking
That never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul, afraid of dying
That never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snow
Lies the seed
That with the sun's love, in the spring
Becomes the rose

Who wrote the original music for this, please?

Banks music store in York specialise in choral music and have an extensive selection. You could give them a call and see if they have it available. (They do mail order). You should be able to find their number through the online yellow pages.

Why not create a choral version yourself Helen!?
This is a lovely song - Bette Middler did a very nice version of it I think.
You could purchase an inexpensive score-writing package for the computer (eg: Noteworthy costs only $39 - see www.noteworthysoftware.com ), purchase the sheet music (for piano say), enter the melody line, then add new parts and enter notes that would 'fit-in' with the chords for that note! Play it back, change it lots... eventually you'll have a masterpiece, you can extract each part from the score, print it all (after obtaining copyright permission from the publishers - they won't mind honest!)...
The big advantage of this - YOU know (hopefully) the standard of your choir (or you'll quickly discover it if not) - what you produce will most likely be achievable by them.
And you'll be as proud as punch when they perform it, especially when each part shows YOUR name as arranger and YOUR name is printed in the Program at a public performance!
Your head of music will be very impressed - and if you get stuck he/she will help you out....

Convinced?
Tell me yes! biggrin.gif

Which Helen are you talking to? Me or Helen VJ?

I suppose I could try to arrange it... Whether it works well or not is another story...!
Katet
we just made up harmonies to it, sing a third under, and invent a descant! worked for us!

Now now!
Subatomic_star Helen - don't pretend you don't know which Helen I'm referring to! (didn't spot there were 2 mind!)
Obviously I was referring to YOU! The other Helen (Katet) has done an arrangement just as I was discussing - well done Helen #2!!
How about the Helen with the arrangement sending a copy to the Helen without the arrangement?!!
If you like, I've checked the web and found LOTS of midi arrangments of this tune. If you want them, I can email them to you (Subatomic_star Helen) - then you could start your own from that. Change the key if it doesn't suit, add a descant with a 3rd also (like Katet suggests)....
If I had time I'd do it for you - but then you wouldn't learn as much that way would you?! And I suspect that learning is the whole part of this exercise in the first place!
Keep us all posted on what you do - we'd all love to see how it goes. Maybe you can show us the final result and we'll give you marks out of 150!!

What makes me think that the users of this website will end up doing Helens assigmnent for her?!!!!
I've PM'd you on this - will send the MIDI files.
Check out the thread for the free notation program, this will hopefully import the midi file and let you alter it. If not, I have a notation program you can 'borrow' for the exercise. wink.gif
Helen
Yup, thanks muchly.

The answer to that question might be, "Because it's still in copyright." Do you know what its status is? In the UK (and most of Europe, AFAIK), copyright extends to the end of the 70th year after the composer's death. The US is much more complicated.

Agree Kenm - that's why I said earlier:

after obtaining copyright permission from the publishers

I know of one person who got permission for this - given its an assignment and not a commercial issue, Helen may well get permission - with restrictions of course.
