Dya reckon that it matters to an opera company or a music college for post grad where you studied your degree? Or is it more about the audition and WHO you worked with that counts more?

Think Id rather go to UNi first to get a more artistic all round education cause I love all the arts - not just music(lthow thats my fav - Dya reckon if I do music and Dance for my degree then Ill still be eligable to apply to music college?

Can you still get work if you do a post grad at a uni as well?
Im stuck- need to decide the best route

Dear Linnetbird!

I don't think it matters where you have studied. Opera companies are looking for outstanding performers as are music colleges. It's about what you can do, not where you got your degree. Some singers don't even have a degree let alone a degree in music!

I know a postgraduate at my music college that studied music at Huddersfield Uni, and I don't think it matters whether you come from music college or uni, if you have what they want, you'll get in regardless!! And I'm sure many don't come from the conventional higher education system anyway! Although i think that would help a great deal!

Ultimately, i strongly believe that you should go where the best teachers are (for you) if you want to achieve your full potential... that is what matters if you want a career out of your instrument..

On my BMus course, most singers come from the usual A level system, but i know many also don't, especially foreign students and mature students. I know one girl in my year never studied music in school at all. there is such a wide range of people, and backgrounds...

Of course, it all helps to have a background in music theory, to play another instrument, to speak many languages etc, but in reality, very few are lucky enough to have all these bonuses, and some have none of these behind them and have to start from scratch!!

In a conservatoire environment, it is heavily based on performance rather than academic work (although you do have your fair share!!) so if that's where your strength lies, perhaps you should go for that route. You learn the academic stuff on the way and you learn it very quickly!!

Good luck with your singing!!! x tongue.gif
