This thread is to talk about forum events in the Manchester area in late 2008/2009, largely organised by notmusimum in conjunction with yours truly.

These will, at least initially, be on the Harborough style 'playday' model, with the possibility of something more ambitious in 2009, or possibly 2010.

Any news stories will appear here as they break.

First playday likely to be at the end of 2008 (November-ish is where we're aiming). smile.gif

Well done notmusimum and Barry clap.gif

I'll try and come as long as you don't make it the 8th - the son of my best friends is getting married that day!

A series or Forum Recitals in the Manchester area would be great.

Phew one thing at a time Petrat!!!

I think we may have a potential venue but will look into other possibilities.

Will probably be interested, but it depends on dates clashing with Guiding stuff already committed to - I can't make the Leeds date as I will be on the Guiding stand in the Urdd Eisteddfod near Llandudno for the third day out of 6! Good job I had this week off work!
barry-clari
I think I'm allowed to say...

Hoping that the first playday will be Saturday 15th November (that's the day before the RNCM sax day). smile.gif

Will confirm in due course.
notmusimum

The room I'm thinking of is available on that day but there may be other options.

A playday sounds good . . .

. . . except that when I think about it I'm not entirely sure what a "playday" is exactly. I'm sure I should know and I feel a little sheepish asking but could someone elucidate, please??

Well we just all get together and play in a big group - or maybe a couple of smaller groups if there is another room and we feel like splitting up for a while. Someone (usually Barry bless him) brings a load of music with various parts, and you select a clef for your instrument and rough standard that you can sight read to and off we go.

Great fun! biggrin.gif

Edit: Also we have volunteers who bring scrummy cakes (Nicki's brownies are legendary tongue.gif yum!) and snacks, for our breaks, and afterwards we sometimes go somewhere for a meal together if folks have time!! party1.gif

That about sums it up.....

There's only one room in the potential venue. Barry will be bringing the music, I'll sort out some yummy stuff (can't promise it will be home made). Lots of places locally for a meal including a carvery and my favourite Pizza place (but it's no restaurant).

Usually forum members with cars will arrange to pick others up from the station. (See on the Leeds concert thread where St George was the taxi service). So if you can get to a nearby station I'm sure you won't be left stuck, especially if you have instruments to carry biggrin.gif

From your part of the world, there's a decent train service to Manchester, and there's Metrolink trams passing close to the venue. As Jane said though, we usually arrange pick-ups for public transport users (for this, it's likely to be from Piccadilly and/or Victoria depending on who comes). It isn't really that far from the centre of Manchester. smile.gif

I've two helpful people with cars, one of them seats 8 loads of room for instruments and passengers, lifts from either of the Manchester stations not a problem. Just let me know nearer the time.
violincjj
Happy to give lifts from Stockport...
barry-clari
This playday is the day before the RNCM sax day, so if you're in Manchester for that, why not take in two events in one weekend? biggrin.gif
Chris H
I think that's what we'll be doing! biggrin.gif party1.gif
notmusimum

Yeay!!! There's some local interest in this too. Looks like it might shape up to be a good day.

Anyone who is in Manchester on the Saturday that would like to participate then please drop me a PM. I'm sure I'll be able to arrange transport form the City Centre to the venue.

It'd be nice for all those attending the Saxday to get together beforehand then anyone who's going alone or hasn't attended before will at least have the chance ot touch base with some forumites.

Anyone reading this who isn't a forum member or hasn't had the nerve to post can also contact me by PM.

No but they could join and not post anything else biggrin.gif I'm just aware that people read the Forum but don't post therefore there must be others that read who are not members at all.

I should have said anyone browsing who hasn't posted before would be welcome if they get in contact biggrin.gif

I've sort of neglected this thread for several reasons. Firstly I thought it was wise to wait for Stalybridge to be done and dusted. Secondly we have a lot on just at the moment. Hopefully towards the end of next week I can sort more things out.

Initially it might be good to get a rough head count of who is interested. I'll clear my PM box so if you want to PM me as a possible. I'm thinking about changing the initial venue so a rough idea of numbers would be useful.

There are about 3 venues locally that I have in mind. One I can use easily as I know the caretaker. It doesn't have a piano so before I book it I'm going to investigate another option. I don't think a venue will be a problem.

We now have a venue all booked and ready to go.

It's close to the terminus of the Metrolink, a train station and the M602.

It also had a Piano biggrin.gif
