Hii.
I have my french reading exam soon, and was wondering if anyone would be so kind to just write french for me to try and understand? I don't really mind what its about as long as its not like impossible! Subjects like school, personal relationships, tourism, leisure, weather, activities etc would be amazing.

Hopefully this thread may help others doing there exams soon as well.

Also, does anyone know where i can listen to french radio like online, or online french? I've done all the bitesize things and all the past papers my teachers given me!

I used to sometimes used Le Monde.fr to practice - it made the real exam seem much easier. Good luck.

Oh my word, I know native francophones who avoid Le Monde.

I'd write in French for you, but I don't want to embarrass myself. J'en ai honte!

a good idea to read and write as much French as you can.
Have you thought of going online to Yahoo! and going to the French part? You can read all the news and lots lots more on there in French.
Take from it as much as you like really.

I occassionally get a Diddl magazinesent over from my relatives in Belguim, and that's a real challenge because you don't just have to scan through for French that you know, but also which words are actual French and which ones translate as "turboterrifotasticamundo" or something like that. French Wikipedia can be very handy if the Diddl website seems just too ridiculous for words!

That reminds me of a book by Raymond Queneau that I started reading (Zazie dans le Métro). He uses all sorts of weird words and constructions that take ages to decifer! Has anyone else read it?

Moi aussi je te conseille vivement de lire un maximum de français sur internet (google, yahoo etc...) et, si tu peux, d'écouter et de parler autant que possible.

Te serait-il possible de parler par MSN ou Skype avec des francophones de langue maternelle pour t'entrainer à l'oral ? C'est franchement la meilleure façon de progresser.

En tout cas, si tu veux répondre en français et qu'on te corrige ton texte, il n'y a aucun problème, on est plusieurs à parler français sur ce site, donc tu es entre de bonnes mains !

Hehe, probably best that us non-natives don't say too much, otherwise we might encourage poor use of the language! I recall I used to play computer games all the way through in a foreign language as revision when I had my GCSE French exams!

Could anybody native French speaking tell me how to pronounce the name Poulenc properly? On Radio 3 they always say the ending -anc- rhyming with bank, whereas I always thought it should be more nasally French rhyming with ensemble??

Just a quick correction, we say vivo en inglaterra - inglesa is the feminine form of the adjective 'English'.





anc (as in bank) is correct (although the vowel should be nasal, like in 'vin') - same thing for the benjamin - we don't say it like in ensemble, but like bank - ba (nasal as in vin) ja min (nassal as in vin).

Je n’ai pas beaucoup de temps à cause d’un emploi du temps très chargé mais voici quelques mots.
Malgré le fait que j’habite en France depuis 1985 mon français est loin d’être parfait. Je mélange toujours le genre des mots, j’oublie de faire accorder les adjectifs et mon accent me trahit – surtout au téléphone. Il y a quelques jours j’ai téléphoné à ma banque et mon interlocuteur m’a demandé si je préférerais m’adresser à un interlocuteur qui parlait anglais !

Alors, il y a de l’espoir pour toi ! Je te conseille de chercher des sites français sur la toile. Tu dis que tu as un examen de lecture – mais tu n’explique pas les modalités. Faut-il lire un extrait, répondre aux questions – ou autre chose ? Il y a des centaines d’années quand je préparais mes A Levels j’ai lu tous les romans de Colette – enfin c’est une idée qui pourrait être utile

Ce fil m'aide aussi, j'ai un examen de francais jeudi! Je suis terrifiée, j'ai beaucoup de problemes avec le grammaire! Pour moi, je trouve les articles sur "google.fr" tres utile (et je suis désolée, j'ai seulement des accents aigus sur mon clavier).

Un autre idée; avez-vous besoin d'écrire pour votre examen? Aujord'hui j'ai écrit mon journal en francais, et c'est beaucoup plus intéressant pour moi que les autres moyens de révision. Probablement parce que je suis tres égocentrique!

Je suis sur que j'ai fait beaucoup d'erreurs, alors n'utilisez pas cela pour quelque chose important!

J'ai oublié tout mon français il y a deux semaines après mes examens français!

Très bonne idée. Moi j'ai fait ça pour la première fois il y a quelques mois et j'ai appris beacoup de choses. Comme je l'ai dit à Rosfrog tout à l'heure, c'est beaucoup plus difficile (ben à mon avis) de rédiger un article ou un paragraphe qui exprime ce qu'on a fait aujourd'hui, par exemple, de manière naturelle que d'écrire une dissertation en français de façon scolaire.

Ah, j'aime bien cette conversation J'adore la francais, je pense que c'était une langue très jolie. J'ai mes examens de francais à mecredi, mais je ne suis pas trop nerveux, car je je pense que je suis assez forte en francais. Depuis environ deux semaines, quelquefois, j'ai parlé avec un nouvelle fille à mon college. Elle ne parle pas l'anglais, donc j'ai dû parler en francais. C'était un peu difficile, mais un bon défi et j'aime beaucoup parler en francais

Try some fun French tongue twisters! (well, they're not really, I just like them )

le verre vert va vers la verre verte
(the green worm is going towards the green glass)

and Un chasseur sachant chasser sait chasser sans son chien de chasse.

Just some grammar corrections - we say :

Le vers vert va vers le verre vert (the green worm goes towards the green glass) and that's not really a tongue twister, but more like a series of homophones designed to make it difficult to understand, like como como como, como como como in Spanish. (What do you mean, How do I eat? I eat the way I eat).

The second one is 'Un chasseur sachant chasser sans son chien est un bon chasseur' or 'un chasseur sachant chasser doit savoir chasser sans son chien de chasse' depending on the region you come from, the first one being my preference.

Here's another good one ' Les chaussettes de l'Archiduchesse, sont elles sèches ? Oui, archi-sèches'.

I don't know how to draw on here, so will ask you to imagine a person following a donkey. Person says:

"Je suis que je suis, mais je ne suis pas que je suis."

(This is a joke using the fact that 1st person singular is the same for etre and suivre.)

After puzzling over this for some time I think it should be "Je suis qui je suis mais je ne suis pas ce que je suis."

I'm sure you're right, kerioboe - I always suspected that my school French teacher was not all he might have been! He translated it for us as, "I am what I am, but I'm not what I'm following". Ignoring the finer points of the grammar, it does have the merit of ensuring that 40 years after my last French lesson, I still remember that "je suis" can have 2 meanings!

I've also found that when in France, most people don't care about my grammar, they are more interested in whether I have enough vocabulary to communicate. I do seem to be fairly good at remembering French and German words over the acres of time since O-levels in 1968, but maybe I should have stayed out of what is an erudite thread aimed at people taking important exams!

Vocabulary is important, but it's not the be all and end all. In work today, someone said to me "tu t'en sors?" and I was very confused and wondered why the heck she'd think I was leaving early...

I would tend to agree that in real life situations grammar doesn't matter too much - you can make yourself understood with faulty grammar but there are occasions when faulty grammar makes what you are trying to say incomprehensible.

can I ask you Kerioboe, please, why 'qui' in the first part? If that is the subject pronoun, then 'je' is also subject. I think, trying to look back, that I first heard that as 'je suis ce que je suis, mais je ne suis pas ce que je suis'.

Your version is also grammatically correct and, as you say, mine changes the meaning. (I am who I am but I'm not what I'm following). I had never heard it before and was trying to make sense of the words that were there without adding anything in. This was why I got "Je suis qui je suis" for the first bit. When I realised that the only thing possible for the second bit was "ce que" it just didn't occur to me to go back and change the first bit.

I have been looking on "le monde" and its getting easier although is still very hard!!
I still have a few more days before the exam yet so hopefully this practice will have helped a lot.
