I've just realised that until my Mom blitzed my room (Basically moving everything from the floor, side, window ledge, chair, keyboard and chest of drawers onto my desk and moaning at me

) My keyboard had an astonishing amount of music on it - it's older than I am and rather delicate, I'm surprised it didn't break under the weight.....

Ou "dining room" is never used for dining. The table's covered with sheet music, and the two big baskets full of sheet music are overflowing. The room is also full of instruments: upright piano, electric violin + amp, normal violin, rebec, strumstick, unstrung guitar, strung guitar, clarinet....
It's a rather small room.
My parents are getting a little annoyed with me

from left to right:
Usually a large stack of music that could fall at any moment
abandoned pencils and rubbers
lamp
another large stack of music in a messy pile
more pencils scattered everywhere
The piano is usually lovely and tidy, with just a lamp in the middle, and the odd pencil or two, because my mum cleans it a lot, but then I come along scatter music everywhere.

The top of our piano isn't too bad. It's whats BEHIND the piano thats awful!
If you cant find the music you want, it will be behind the piano, along with pencils, rubbers, sharpeners, a fair amount of dust, and a spider or two, and occasionally a cat (our cat loves sleeping behind the piano, or on the piano stool, or on your lap if you play!).

This is a really interesting thread - it's nice to be nosy and hear what accumulates on top of everyone's pianos!
On mine there is a touch-sensitive silver lamp, a pink clothes peg, a pencil, a (usually) neat pile of piano books and a black wind-up metronome. And down the back there are at least 3 pencils that I have lost and can't be bothered retrieving!!

What an excellent topic! The top of my piano is clear, but the keyboard has a small notebook on it, with a pencil at either end. Right now, the music stand is overloaded with volumes I and II of World Renowned Piano Pieces, a book of Handel pieces, Brahms Op.118, Beethoven Op.27 No.2, the 'Goldberg Variations', Debussy Preludes Book One, two AB selections of Haydn sonatas and a book of manuscript paper. All the other music is carefully stored in an adjacent bookcase, with a small plaster bust of Liszt perched on top.

my rather ancient U1 has an even older metronome on it - my mother bought me that when I was doing grade 2 and stuck a "you must practice your scales every day" sign on it - the marks ot the sticky tape are still evident to this day

My old cat used to jump up between my arms onto the keys while is was playing, which could be a bit of a shock, but the cat we have now will sit on the back of the sofa (behind the piano stool) but never actually sit on the piano. It must vary with different cats.
My dog will come and listen to me play too, until she starts licking me feet, at which point she gets chucked out

the dogs come in, and stick there heads right by where the hole is, above the pedals, just below the keyboard, you know what i mean? and then get scared so leave to go back on the couch and watch animal planet, one of them LOVES anmal planet, they lick the screen when they see dogs, and bark at lions etc.

Well, my piano is facing the wall with the door to the left of it and the end of the sofa behind, and I cleared it off yesterday. Now we have a completely bare piano with loads of sheet music next to it in a big box (the books are in my room) and my school bag and other stuff dumped next to it

Well my piano is digital so doesn't have much room on it...I've got a magazine file with a few of the books I use the most inside it, a little pot with scales and arpeggios written on it (so I can pick some out and random to practise them), and my metronome
Underneath my piano is very cluttered, but there's nowhere else for anything to go!! I've got 3 more magazine file things with more frequently used books in, two folders (one with my exam pieces, comment sheets and certificates in, and the other with loose sheet music), I have a djembe, another random wooden instrument from Jamaica that I don't know the name of, it's beaters, a portable stereo, headphones and a CD holder case thing

Ahhh does my head in!! Especially when I'm playing duets!!
However if I had a grand piano and a much bigger room (the room doubles up as a study) then I definitely would have
nothing on the piano...I'd be like Hugh Grant in Music and Lyrics where people keep putting their bags etc on his piano and he's like 'Noo!' and moves it all off

I will still play some scales, it's just nice to throw away the tools of enforced scale practice. I certainly won't be touching legato thirds on A#/C# again. I must have spent HOURS practising those, only to have a complete blank in the exam because I was still panicking at that point. Ah well.

Perhaps when I have got over the trauma.

A mountain of music which I keep meaning to put away, but scares me too much to even try to tackle, a collection of hairbrushes (my Mum's, not mine!) pens and pencils, manuscript paper, lined paper, my most recent school photograph featuring my 300 strong year group (this takes up over hlaf the length of the piano) and my brother's practise pad and drum sticks. I used to have a collection of recorder on top of the piano, but found that they rolled off quite a lot.
As for animals, my cousin's dog likes to sit on your feet while you play the piano. This is very toning for the calves as you lift him up and down when pedalling!
