Well I did my Grade 8 piano yesterday - my "test run" so to speak to see how I got on under exam conditions and what the aural questions were like. Went okeyish, although I made a few slips in a couple of my pieces at places where I'm usually finger perfect which was a bit irritating, but hey thats exam pressure for you mad.gif . I kept going though thankfully smile.gif. Think I did ok in 3 of the aural questions but went completely blank on the final question re commenting on piece the examiner played. By that time I was brain dead ! biggrin.gif

If I pass it will be a bonus as viewed this as a "dry run" since not sat a music exam for years. Even if I fail it was well worth the experience to prepare me for future exams - just the whole thing of walking into the room, being able play from memory any scale/arpeggio asked for by the examiner, aural tests etc. Good luck to all those who have still to sit their exams.

Arrghh, I did my grade 8 piano 4 days ago and am still having nightmares. I was sooo nervous during scales I started on the wrong notes so many times it was ridiculous. He corrected me at the start but after a while... sigh, he has every reason to give me a low score. The only thing that went well was possibly my pieces and sight reading was good. Aural was a killer, then again, I can't do aural for nuts. Failed my grade 6 aural tongue.gif My examiner was really kind though, hopefully kind enough to pass me blink.gif Good luck with the results!

I was fine just at the very beginning but then seeing the examiner out of the corner of my eye suddenly made me very nervous. My heart was racing ten to the dozen ! He asked me one scale which I know inside out and I just suddendly got a complete blank but managed to fumble my way through it ! Good luck with your results too. I just want to get them soon to see if I've passed !

I've just done my grade 8 bassoon today. Unusre of the outcome. It's really nice when you get an examiner who's interested in what you do isn't it? I found mine incredibly helpful and just a nice person generally. I feel quietly confident and hope I get a decent mark. I hate the aurals too. They ask a bassoonist about a Jazz piece?! How ridiculous!! Oh well, it's only one small section smile.gif

The wait.. tell me about it, it's driving me insane. I had a nightmare yesterday, where somehow or rather, the examiner gave me a second chance for lower part singing, as in a totally different one from the previous. Weird, no? No idea why, but I lost my voice altogether, and he told me that he could only hear 1/4 of what I was singing. He then proceeded to telling me that he was really sorry but I was going to have to fail this time.

I woke up totally convinced that I had just failed my exam, but after much consideration, it just didn't make much sense for the examiner to tell you in the face that you have failed. Nevertheless, I'm still quite freaked out about it.

I need to see my results NOW!!! Another 2 weeks.. gosh, I don't like this. I reckon it's worst than going for the actual exam itself.

Thanks biggrin.gif I'm sure you'll be fine too, fingers crossed for you smile.gif

I got mine through post. I'm actually in Australia though. I don't think there are as many candidates here so the wait is shorter. This is the first time I've done it in Australia so I'm not sure if 9 days it's the norm. My previous grades were all done in Malaysia and I had to wait for 2-3 months before results.

hey everyone, thanks for the well wishes biggrin.gif

Those that are still waiting for results, all the best, I'm sure you guys will be fine smile.gif

It is super frustrating to just sit and wait, not being able to do anything to speed up the process. Probably fair to say that it is torture! But don't worry, we all go through the 'now we sit and wait' phase, it's all part of the exam package!!

Congrats!

Ok, i did my grade 8 piano yesterday. One of my pieces was fantastic, the other two i made small slips, but nothing major, and nothing that made me stop/slow dow so hopefully i wont lose too many marks for that. Anyway, It was never going to be a flawless performance was it?

Scales were great, sightreading too, but aural was horrendous. Oh well, hopefully the rest will have brought my marks up.

roll on results....

Sounds like a job well done party1.gif If it's little slips examiner don't usually care all that much. Well,as you say, they can't expect everything to be perfect!

Don't worry about the aural. I swear I had no idea what was going on. After getting a 9 in my grade 6, I expected worst this time round but managed to bluff my way through to a 12... That's more than I ever expected, though it is really quite a bad mark tongue.gif

Good luck with the results smile.gif

thanks guys.

Thing, is i did surprisingly well in vln aural (17) so thought id be fine this time. obviously not, but hey soooo gald its over!

Just gone online and found out that I've passed my Grade 8 biggrin.gif Am really pleased as put myself in as a 'test run' thinking if I passed it would be a bonus. My teacher was dragging her heels & wouldn't put me in this time round as said I would definitely fail, so feeling quite chuffed with myself party1.gif

I got 110, not a brilliant mark but a reasonable pass as thought I might if I was lucky get 101 laugh.gif . Two of my pieces pulled me down ie Mozart & Brahms. I made a couple of nervous stumbles in both so was expecting to be marked down. I was so pleased with my aural result as it was the bit I was dreading, although was pretty confident in quite a few of the tests bar the last one where you comment on the piece the examiner plays. I've been using Hofnote to practice and I think it has definitely helped me tune my ear in so to speak.

List: B03 20
List: A01 24
List: C09 20

I'm going to take some time to learn more repertoire and then my aim is to work towards a Diploma, although goodness knows how long that will take me !! I like to have goals though as it pushes me. This was the first music exam I'd sat since 1979 so quite relieved that I managed to pass as did some nervous stumbles in a couple of my pieces which reflected in the marks & comments. Still, going to take on board the comments and move forward - onwards & upwards as they say ! How about you - any plans to do a Dimploma ?

Right now I'm 'teacher-less'. If I managed to find a great teacher who's willing to work with me(I'm sick of teachers that make me feel like they're only doing it for the money and never willing to just give a little extra), I would absolutely love to get a diploma, though it may take me forever to pluck up the courage to sit for another music exam!

The aim now is probably to work towards gaining more confidence. I still doubt my own playing alot of the times, so yeah, have to keep working on that. For example, I still think that my examiner passed me only because there were so few candidates that particular day(I don't even know why that's relevant!) and he was just in a good and generous mood. I mean, I can't have played well enough to pass!! It's pretty much everything BUT I can actually play grade 8 stuff up to standard.

Maybe with a good teacher I might just get that bit of confidence I need!

WOW!! party1.gif Great job!!! So glad for you biggrin.gif

My brother once had his teacher asking him not to turn up for his exam because she was that sure he would fail. My mum told him to just have a go and he got a Merit. I second BerkshireMum, I don't see why people have to put others down. Seriously, does it hurt to just give someone a little bit of encouragement?

Constructive critism always welcome, of course. But I have had one too many teachers who doubted me, hence, refer to previous post. I hated lessons right up till grade 6, and I still can't figure out why I didn't just give up, though right now I'm sooo glad I didn't. The only reason why the last 2 grades were better was suddenly, I fell in love with my instrument. That's right, I went through all the previous grades absolutely hating both my instrument and lessons. I started when I was 4, 14 years later and I never once thought that I was any good.

Okok, need to kill negative thoughts NOW!!

Oh, congrats again!! wink.gif

I mean, I can't have played well enough to pass!! It's pretty much everything BUT I can actually play grade 8 stuff up to standard.

Maybe with a good teacher I might just get that bit of confidence I need!

I'm also currently teacherless but want to give myself a bit of space to learn new pieces and just enjoy playing without working towards an exam deadline. Having not got a particularly good mark in my exam I don't know whether I'd actually ever be able to do a Diploma, but I'm blooming well going to give it a go however long it takes. That was my first music exam for 29 years so I was nervous but still have a great sense of satisfaction that I passed, albeit not with a better mark eg a Merit. However, I'm not going to get hung up on that. Got to move forward and enjoy playing all that great music that there is out there ! biggrin.gif

Considering the time gap between your exams, I must say you've done pretty well so you do have every reason to feel satisfied! Besides, how many people would bother going for one after such a long time? Not giving up is an achievement by itself! Whatever you decide to do, good luck and bring on the music!! clarinet.gif
